  Note his dark/discolored scleras and lots of dark around the eyes.

• Description

  Jilles is a very friendly guy, albeit serious. He's humorless but quite sweet, with a genuine desire to make people happy; he seems like a loner, but he has a deep desire for companionship and hates being alone. However, despite being so polite and kind, his serious nature and lack of charisma can make him difficult to be around. His desire for approval also makes him sensitive to criticism. He thinks of himself as a burden, so he does whatever he can to feel wanted and useful; this makes him very submissive and easily manipulated, but also a loyal and reliable friend. He's willing and even eager to do almost anything that is asked of him, for better or worse.
  
  On his own he's complacent and quiet. He has a very calm temperament, and is hard to upset, but if you threaten him the right way, his kindness will disappear quickly. Despite all his good intentions, given the word, he's essentially a thug; don't underestimate his stomach for terrible acts when he considers them necessary or deserved.

• Physical Description

  Jilles is a sallow-skinned white man, 6'4" with a rectangular, undernourished build. He has naturally dull, dark blue hair, roughly neck-length and usually tied back into a loose, thin ponytail. He keeps clean-shaven, but isn't very naturally hairy to begin with. His eyes are reddish-brown, tired and puffy, with dark circles underneath. He's missing his left pinky finger, with rough scars across the left side of his head, neck and ear. He also has a newer, thinner scar on his lower jaw.
  
  Overall, he's gaunt and horse-faced, with a long Greek nose and a sharp jaw. He dresses very modestly, with turtleneck sweaters, jackets, and slacks paired with gloves and black cowboy boots. Having very little sense of style, his wardrobe has little variety and mostly matches his hair.
  
  Generally, he gives off an impression of being intimidating and exhausted, and looks as sick as he is.

• Powers

  Jilles has a genetic condition that grants him some metal-based abilities at the expense of his overall health. He senses metal that's within about 25 feet of him, with greater fidelity as the object is closer to him. Because he's so used to it, he rarely thinks much of the things he senses around him, but unless you have no metal on your person (including dental work, zippers, buckles, or eyelets), you can't really sneak up on him. If you have any particularly odd metal objects or weapons on you, he will notice - that's his job.
  
  He also has some ability to manipulate metal that he can sense with his mind. Though he can't budge anything with more mass than an average frying pan comfortably, he's skilled with projectiles and small mechanisms.
  
  Most of his system isn't well-equipped to handle these abilities and buckles under the pressure. He often experiences migraine symptoms such as headaches, nausea and vertigo, particularly in the presence of moving metal objects. He has terrible insomnia and a weak constitution; even though he isn't squeamish, it's very easy to make him vomit. His immune system doesn't function properly and attacks his body. He has good days and bad days, but as time goes by, the latter becomes more frequent. He's been told that he has around 15 more years to live, a fact that hangs heavily over him.

• History

  • Born to a gambling addict and a woman who passed her disease on to him. Between gambling and medical bills, they were taking money from loan sharks before he was born.
  • His parents went into hiding when it became obvious they couldn't pay any money back.
  • His parents were hunted down and killed years later (when he was five) by Dom Uccello, who didn't know that their son was present.
  • Ended up maimed and scared. Dom took pity and brought him to Carly, his wife and back-alley surgeon.
  • Adopted (not-so-legally) by them, partly out of mercy and partly to stop him from ever being a witness against them.
  • Still, was well cared for and loved, especially by Carly. Dom wasn't cruel but never close.
  • Became especially attached to Wesley, their son, three years younger than him.
  • Joined the organization Dom was now head of when he turned 18, partly because he didn't feel like he belonged anywhere else, and partly in hopes of earning Dom's recognition and approval. Proved himself useful, but was given many more allowances than others.
  • Had a reality check at 21 when Wesley was kidnapped for ransom and he tried to save him alone. Failed and made a mess Dom had to clean up. Wes made it out okay, but Jilles was punished for it. Got the scar on his lower jaw.
  • Hasn't been shaken badly since then. Fairly comfortable where he is: living in his small apartment in the city he's lived in all his life, doing a job that is easy for him under a man that he is waiting to please.

• Relationships

  • Wesley Uccello is absolutely precious to Jilles, and, as his adoptive brother, the only person he considers properly "family." They are close bordering on co-dependent, and Jilles is massively doting and protective. He'll go to any lengths to keep Wes happy, and doesn't fight it when Wes seems overly fond.
    
    Jilles is Wes' adoptive brother, very dear to him. Jilles is the only person that Wes is very close to. Because Jilles is very doting and protective, Wesley is very comfortable with him and values him greatly. At times they (particularly Wes) can veer into being overly fond and cuddly for family, which might make others uncomfortable, but neither of them think anything of it; Wes simply wants to be close while he can. It hurts him a great deal to be watching Jilles wither away.
    
  • Dom Uccello is Wes' father or Jilles' boss. Jilles rarely addresses him any other way. Jilles is too easily manipulated to actually carry any of the resentment that Dom thinks he does. He's actually grateful to Dom. He just wants Dom's approval.
    
    Dom has always had a lot of guilt over Jilles. He raised Jilles kindly, and to not make any trouble for him. This worked, but Dom has never stopped being a little afraid of him. That combination of factors stops him from being close, or really considering him family. He carries a concealed bone knife every day.
    
  • Carly Uccello was Jilles' adoptive guardian, but never comfortable being called his mother - she was "auntie." She had a lot of guilt over what happened to him and his parents and gave him all the kindness she was capable of.
    
    Jilles was raised primarily by Carly and loved her a lot. He looked up to her uncritically and never understood her guilt.
    
  • Tennant is one of Jilles' bosses, and Jilles finds him two-faced and despicable. This is true but at least partially displacement, since he wants to like and be liked by Dom, so he ends up blaming Tennant for things Dom is actually responsible for. Tennant is one of the few people Jilles knows and isn't nice to.
    
    Tennant resents Jilles a little for all the cushy treatment and allowances Dom gives him. He finds Jilles boring and unintelligent. He usually calls him "the drone."
    
  • Daniel Sunderland is Tennant's bodyguard. Tennant used to meet with Dom often at Dom's house in the years after Carly died. Jilles was lonely, so when he was just waiting Daniel would keep Jilles company. Jilles looks up to Daniel a lot. They have similar jobs and Jilles has always seen Daniel as being in the kind of position he aspires to. They still meet up occasionally for dinner or coffee.
    
    Daniel has known Jilles since Jilles was a teenager, which gives him just a hint of protective paternal feelings. These are both positive and negative. He's fond of Jilles - he thinks he's a little dumb but very sweet - and thus struggles with watching Jilles' condition deteriorate.
    
  • Luke Orwell is one of Jilles' better friends. He keeps a similar schedule and has plenty of patience of Jilles' awkwardness. Jilles probably wouldn't rely on him too much, but appreciates having someone so outgoing actually like to be around him.
    
    Luke thinks Jilles is funny. They often work together or just run into each other, so they hang out fairly often. Luke keeps testing how much he can get away with before Jilles actually gets mad at him.
