  On the night of the Gifts, the gods came to those who were worthy. Thus did they come unto a particular field, which is today the Field of Mind, on the edge of the great forests. They floated above this field, above the heads of ferals who walked on four legs, for the Gifts they bore were not for those content to keep their heads low to the ground. As the wind carried their scent into the forest, one of their number gave voice to a howl like no Wolf had ever uttered before.
  
  The howl carried to the ears of Wolf kin, beckoning them to the Field where Mind awaited. Of every shape and color came they, the descendants and kin of Wolves, all creatures who understood the import of the howl. The Wolves came, of course, but so did the Coyote, the Jackal, all the species which shared kinship with the Wolves and could understand the import. They smelled the scent of the gods, beheld them with their eyes but understood not. For at this time the kin of Wolf were simple ferals, beasts with no Mind or Soul.
  
  Matri, Mother of Mind, stretched forth her hands to the beasts and spake unto them. "Come, those of you with ears to hear. Come and accept the Gifts. Rise up." Most recoiled, not understanding, knowing only fear. They had no way to see the future. But a few approached. Matri hovered too high above the ground to be reached on four legs and her place in the field meant there was nowhere to climb to reach her. There was but one way to accept her Gifts. The Wolves had to stand on two legs instead of four.
  
  Some few understood. They rose to their hind legs and placed their paws in her hands. To them were given the Gifts. Mind from her right hand. Soul from her left.
  
  From that day forward, they were the Firstborn of the Clan.

  Standing on our hind legs to shake paws with gods. In all my travels, I have yet to find any better explanation for why we came to be. Methinks most do not care to even look for one.
