When a creek was born of the Mississippi river, so was Doutzen, but it quickly began to dry up. Doutzen was taken up the river only to be sent down it and rescued by a fisherman. She was eventually adopted by a couple who had met at Yale University and were visiting family in Biloxi, and the little Abel family moved to New Haven, Connecticut, to start their life together. Growing up, Doutzen knew a relatively charmed life. She was particularly athletic as a child, dancing ballet and swimming on a local swim team, but she gave up swim team by the time she entered high school to afford herself more free time which was largely spent on keeping her nose in a good book. She graduated at the top of her class with honors and entered Brown University for the fall semester. Her father died unexpectedly, and Doutzen dropped out of school to return home to her mother. She never went back. When her mother became romantically involved with an old family friend, Doutzen believed it was finally time for her to get out of New Haven. She traveled to Biloxi to stay with her grandparents for a short while, focusing on her painting while there before taking a drive down the coast, which brought her to New Versailles. |
