Lapis Iris Lazuli

History

• Biography

  Lapis "Iris" Lazuli was formed on Homeworld along with a small section of other Lapises for one purpose - to decorate the leaving halls of Blue Diamond. Sitting poised at all times in decorative insets in the walls of the hall, she was to be ready any time Blue Diamond approached her palanquin. On such an occasion, she and her sisters would all begin their dance, twirling and floating beautifully, bending the fountains between them to match their movements, unfurling their glistening wings. The march would always be proceeded by a band of Tanzanites, who were musicians.
  In between such performances, another gem came through the hall unexpectedly. The Lapises, not knowing what to do on such an occasion, stared silently at the pearl who had entered. All but Iris, who timidly asked him his business there.
  The two formed an unlikely connection, as he went out of his way to visit her, eventually wooing her with his charming ways.
  And then their relationship was found out. Or perhaps somebody told. It's unclear. What is clear is that the two were set to be harvested by their authorities. The pearl made his execution date. Iris did not. A renegade coral attempted to intervene in the situation, intending to save them both. He was only able to gather Iris onto the ship, and reluctantly, she sailed off to Earth with the rest of the rebels.
  At first rejecting Rose Quartz and her Earthen family, Iris was bitter about the death of her boyfriend. She blamed Coral, and Rose, and anyone else - including the Diamonds, eventually.
  As she sulked, she took shelter in a damp, muddy cave, learning to bend the water within the mud to move it all as one. When she finally resurfaced, she did so with a hatred for all authority, vowing to only trust herself, and to stick up for those she considered to still be trodden followers of some sort. It was a tumultuous reunion at first, she and Rose's army, but it wasn't long before she realized her ideology would be accepted by them, and she'd learn to consider them equals fighting for the same cause.
  
  Iris, like nearly all gems at the time, was corrupted by the Diamonds' song. She grew thin, vine-like - her head sprouted into a deep blue cave flower, her gem situated in the middle. She was confused and scared and angry. She found herself burrowing deep in the human trash heaps near their former base.
  And one day, a small violet gem - an Amethyst - came snooping around her garbage home. Curled inside a vase, she was transported to the gem's room, where she would live, ever snooping and slinking, until caught by her, Steven Universe, and Pearl.
  
  Not too long later, she found herself waking in a pool, surrounded by the Diamonds, and Steven, and her old friends - she was, once more, confused and scared and angry. But this time was different - this time, she was herself, and her feelings were her own.
  Called to join her friends, she ignored the presence of the dictators she had came to hate so. She met back up with Coral, who of course remembers every gem he's ever saved. She got to meet the other Lapis, and the two hit it off quite nicely. She apologized to Amethyst, Steven, and Pearl, who were more than understanding, of course.
  But she still misses her Powder Blue. She still sits, staring at the stars, finally getting to the point of blaming herself. She might've accepted his passing long ago, but she still harbors some dark thoughts concerning her own rebellion. If only that magic boy Steven could learn to unharvest next...
