  Distant and quiet, the eldest and last surviving daughter of the Mooncairn family would often be found in the highest rooms of the conservatory tower, studying and writing until the dawn comes to disturb whatever candle light lingers around her. Her wardrobe is a chorus of muted greys, charcoals and blacks, fashioned into various gowns that seem to float along with her wherever she goes in an ethereal manner. Although she shrouds herself in a curtain of demurity, to underestimate her would be an oversight only made once.

• Upbringing

  Mosrael is one half of the elder set of twins, and likely the last remaining heir to the Mooncairn family name. Her mother, a human of unknown origins, raised Mosrael, her twin brother, and her two younger sisters in the safety of the Bridewell Tower. The structure had once been part of the Bridewell Academy, a university for those gifted in the magical arts. Though the school had once been a physical testament to the grandeur and strength of the magical community, it had since fallen into ruin after being ransacked by the Brelfeldt family in their pursuit of any and everything to bolster their growing empire. All that remained was the tower, abandoned by the wizards and other magic users that once inhabited it.
  
  Sometime before the fall of the tower, Mosrael's mother sent her and her younger siblings off to live with an acquaintance by name of Nanny Angler. The actual departure from Bridewell Tower had been less than warm - if anything, her mother was curt and short and nearly rushed them out the door. Had they done something wrong? Was their mother ashamed of them? And why weren't her other siblings going with them? After studying under her mother's tutelage for so many years, she felt cast aside when she awoke the morning following her 10th birthday to discover that she would no longer be living at Bridewell Tower.
  
  Nanny Angler lived far away in a swampy, forgotten corner of the forest. It was here that Mosrael spent her later childhood years, learning about the forest surrounding her home and the mystical abilities that had been passed down through her family for generations.
  
  As she grew, Mosrael's interests were cultivated by the secrets held within the arcane tomes Nanny Angler would sometimes share with her, and any mention of their family's ancestors would set a fierce little twinkle in her eyes. She wanted to know more about where they came from, who her relatives were, and what they once were. Surely, even now in their weakened state, Mosrael believed that her family was destined for greatness.
  
  In time, even the forest became unsafe as the Brelfeldt forces continued to grow in number and seek out the last outlying magic users that had not sworn allegiance to their cause. The last remaining siblings were taken away from Nanny Angler, who had been charged with conspiring against the crown and imprisoned in a place whose name would never be shared with the children. Upon arrival to the Capitol, the four of them were separated and dragged through a series of aggressive tests to judge their abilities before being assigned to destinations and duties that were not to be shared with them. Their fates had seemingly been decided for them by the Brelfeldt family, and that was the last time Mosrael saw her siblings.
  
  The eldest daughter was entered into an institute of sorts, hidden deep within the walls of the Capitol, where she was taught and tested on materials that were too dangerous for the general populous to know of - secrets about Death and the Dead, and how to harness their strengths for mortal purposes. They did not speak of it, but the other students often shared uneasy looks amongst themselves as fewer and fewer of them returned to their secret classes over the years.

• The Present

  Shortly after her twenty-first birthday, Mosrael was inducted into a private council of other gifted individuals whose sole purpose was to advise and support King Brelfeldt in his pursuit of expansion. Their combined abilities gave him the insight to see into the future, the past, and other planes of existence in the hopes of granting him the tools he needed to rule with an iron fist - and to prepare for a whispered, inevitable war.
  
  Opinions were not a luxury that Mosrael was granted, and thus her work in the king's council was neither her choice nor preference, but rather her only reason for existence. She had no where to go, no family to return to, and no first hand knowledge of anything beyond the stone and marble halls of the Capitol. Friendship was frowned upon for someone in her position, and so solitude was commonplace among her colleagues. At least, until the King's daughter wandered into the conservatory late at night in the fall. Mosrael guessed her to be roughly the same age, although it was hard for her to be sure. As she prepared to leave, the princess asked her what she was doing in the tower, to which Mosrael responded mechanically that she had been documenting the stars before taking her leave and quietly descending back down the tower and to her own room.
  
  The two met briefly on several other occasions, during which the princess would ask about many things. Sometimes she would inquire about the stars or particular texts from the library, and on some occasions she would even ask Mosrael personal questions. Where was she from? Where was her family? Why did she come to the Capitol? Many of these questions were things that could not be given real answers, but even still, the other girl's curiosity and conversation was what Mosrael assumed might be what most people could refer to as a friendship of sorts.
  
  Time passed slowly and Mosrael was charged with more and more inquiries from the king about resurrection, the Dead, and if they could be controlled. Though she had a great familiarity with the subject matter, it still made her uneasy to research and report on such knowledge when she felt it was better left alone. Although she could guess at the king's motives, it was beyond her position to question or refuse his requests.
  
  And then, there was a tragedy. The Queen had passed away.
  
  The kingdom went into mourning as was traditional at the loss of a royal family member, and the king's council was temporarily postponed while funeral preparations were made and religious rituals were performed. It was sad, but Mosrael would be lying if she were to claim any personal connection to the loss of the king's wife. However, another death was soon to pass that would cause her actual pain.
  
  The Princess was reported dead.
  
  While the Queen's passing was regarded as a somber reality, the death of the Princess sent the Capitol into an uproar. Was it all planned? Was it treason? Rumors flew so quickly and suspicions were rising higher and higher by the hour that it was no surprise each and every person who had been in contact with the young woman was interrogated at length. Mosrael was no exception to this inquisition, except for one detail. The King himself, was part of her interview, and he only had one question:
  
  "Can you bring her back?"
  
  Mosrael was quiet for several moments before she spoke quietly. "If I did, it wouldn't be her anymore. The Dead are not meant to be returned to this world."
  
  "But you can?" he implored.
  
  "Th-that would not be a-advisable," she began, but was cut short.
  
  "Bring her back."
  
  "Your H-Highness," she whispered, but she found herself unable to continue to speak.
  
  "Then you are useless to me."
  
  Mosrael felt a hard thwack to the back of her head, and everything went black.
  
  She didn't know how long she had been unconscious, but she awoke to the cold, filthy floor of a jail cell against her cheek and a terrible throbbing in her head.
