Passed around between nobility as a lavish and exotic pet, Pitaya only knew the luxuries of rich living - even if he was just seen as a trophy because of a priceless gem that was in his possession. He had watched arguments arise over ownership of what could be considered his "dragon's treasure", the hefty head-sized stone that seemed to catch light in its glimmering cut even in the darkest of places.
Bloodshed between masters and mistresses alike was commonplace. It was as if the gem itself brought on an insurmountable greed in anyone who was lucky enough to lay eyes on it. But it was all inconsequential to Pit, who outlived all of his mortal owners by age or by avoiding their petty conflict.
Pit's last owner, a duke who was most willing to throw around his weight and his collection of invaluable antiques and other rarities, bartered the gem off of a thief who had managed to steal it. And with the gem came the dragon. The duke, however, saw no appeal in Pitaya and ordered him to be kept leashed at all times. Even when the duke would sell the dragon to willing buyers, Pit would return weeks later as if willingly submitting to being restrained and mistreated. And each time he returned, news would follow that the master he escaped from was found gored and dead.
The duke never met such fate.
A day came when the duke found some of his possessions as well as Pitaya stolen from his estate, revelling in the fact that the dragon was gone, but the gem remaining untouched. Foolish for the duke to think the dragon wouldn't once again return for his treasure, but luck was on his side.
Pitaya found himself further from home than most beings could ever imagine - spat out with his captor by a magical rift into a new, foreign land. Even if he was dealt a losing card, Pit's to-a-fault calm demeanor keeps him steady and able to reassure himself that one day he will return for his gem. -
