Hellboy

Hi, I play Hellboy! Most of the roleplay world knows me as Jabber. If you'd like to know a little bit about me, you can check out my personal page here. I've been a fan of Hellboy for a while, both the comics and the movies (though the 2019 version isn't my cup of tea), and I play my version of our favorite stinky pancake man as a mixture between the animated movies, del toro's trilogy, and a smidgen of the comics.

If you're interested in playing with Hellboy, I've made things a little easier on you. This page contains a basic summary of the character. You can also find my rules and limits on the writer page I linked above, which I do ask that interested parties read before roleplaying with me. Which Hellboy?
I play Hellboy as a mixture of his movie, comic, and cartoon versions in both history and personality, but there's a heavy leaning towards the Guillermo del Toro movie's version. If you're playing another canon from his universe, we can certainly talk about mixing and matching lore so things add up between us though.

Is he available to play with?
Sure is! That being said, I am pretty picky about who I play Hellboy with, and what plots. He takes a lot more energy for me to play than one of my OCs, though I do enjoy playing him. He also tends to draw types that want Hellboy to fight or rescue their character. I'm not really interested in those plots. I'm burned out on them, and don't enjoy them. I prefer plots where both characters have to work together towards a common goal rather than against each other. I'm also more likely to accept a roleplay if you pick one of his plots rather than just throwing your character at me and hoping it sticks.

If you want to play with him, I also play him within the group I run, Agents of the Multiverse. I am not currently looking to play him within any other groups at this time.

What is he like?
Hellboy is a rough around the edges snarky loner. He can be charming when he wants to be, but prefers not to be. He's got a heart of gold, but also a will of iron, and doesn't have much patience for those looking to control him or those with delicate dispositions. He's here to do a job and do it well.


What are his goals?
Hellboy hunts monsters. He's good at it. It's what he's always done, and probably to at least some degree, what he always will do.



♚ Sharp Edges: Hellboy won't coddle your character, even if he likes them. That's just not who he is. If he doesn't find them worth his time, or there are other more important things going on, he may flat out ignore them. If they're in the way, things may get unpleasant. I play Hellboy as he is, which means IC feelings may sometimes get hurt. Hellboy's feelings do not reflect mine, so please don't think this means I don't like you, but be prepared for this ahead of time. Hellboy has the reputation he does for a reason, though he also won't go out of his way to wreck your character's day either (as long as they're one of the good guys).

If for some reason your character finds themselves in opposition to Hellboy -- something which I'd prefer to discuss ahead of time-- know that he doesn't hold back. He probably won't try to kill your character, but long stays in the hospital aren't off the table. He does what he has to do. In either situation, I always try to play fair even if Hellboy is being kind of a jerk-- I will always strive to create ways out or solutions narrative wise, even if that isn't the character's goal, and I absolutely believe in player check ins when things get rough.

♚ Loose Long Term: I play this incarnation of Hellboy continuously from roleplay to roleplay, and will update his history and files accordingly. I'm still figuring out how to juggle other canons and their various incarnations where that's concerned, however, so unless we're playing long term, I may elect to omit one off encounters from his long term history for the sake of my own sanity.

✘ #Themainantagonist - A little bit of grump is fine, but if our characters are fighting all the time, we're not going anywhere. They have to be able to put aside what they're fighting about to reach their goals. For this character especially, I'm more looking for cooperative plots rather than chase me/fight me style ones. If you offer me a plot where Hellboy has to fight your character, then I will probably turn you down. I'm burnt out on them. ✘ Smol Children - Cute on occasion, but I really only play with the kid characters of friends, or in my groups. ✘ Vanilla Humans - I gotta have some weird with my roleplay or it's not fun for me. Human characters are fine, but make them interesting. I like big personalities. ✘ Not here to DM/Storytell - Please be able to carry the story in equal parts to me! Carrying it alone gets exhausting. ✘ Do I know you? - I'm more interested in organically formed relationships than anything pre-decided.

✔ From All Corners - I'm game with both original, fandom, and canon characters! Lemme at 'em! Crossovers can be fun too! ✔ Scale Those Characters - Please keep in mind that if we're fighting a mutual bad guy while you're playing your super cool powerful character that it's not much fun if your character one hit kills them. A lot of my plots contain monsters and villains galore, and trust me, your character will have the chance to shine plenty, but let them get there first. Sometimes it's important to reel that power in in order to get some character bonding done during travel rather than teleporting them there, or some cool detective work that would uncover mysteries we wouldn't know otherwise instead of just having them blast straight to the bad guy's lair. Savor that story, don't gulp it! ✔ Strange & Usual - I myself am! Aliens, monsters, vampires, you name it! The weirder the better!

✐ Comes as he is - I may be open to AUs within reason, but this is not the first thing you should come at me with. I have my characters the way they are because that's how I enjoy playing them, and I'm not usually interested in changing them heavily unless I'm really invested in a plot or idea.
