During his ranger training in Almia, Reiji stumbled upon an uncommon, if not rare sight there: an audino. She seemed scared, lost, and confused rather than wild, probably as a result of being released by a previous owner, and he began feeding her his scraps. After a few days, he earned her trust and she began to follow him around. When she came to the rescue of an injured Pokemon he was trying to protect, he realized she wanted to help him, and he adopted her as his permanent partner.

Not long after he was finished with his training, Reiji was assigned back to his home in the Sevii Islands due to a severe lack of rangers there. While the region of Almia only allows one permanent Pokemon partner per ranger,
the Kanto region does not, so he decided to add to his collection of helpers. A fearow was caught first to serve as a method of aerial transportation so he could easily travel from island to island.
