  Bear is an old and worn veteran who has long since served his time. He went into the military young, driven by a desire to protect his people in a better way than he could ever have on the Comanche reservation. During this time the Vietnam war was in full swing, and it was more than easy to get sent over right into the action. Hardly 19, Bear(PFC) and his platoon were thrown onto the front lines. They were doing quite well for themselves, until one day during a heated encounter Bear's battle buddy triggered a landmine, and they both were tossed back from the blast. Bear was not nearly as injured as his friend, but when he reached over to assess the damage his latent mutant power emerged. As soon as he touched him his friend went from being badly injured to fine, but Bear found himself in agony. If not for the other soldier carrying him to safety he would not have come back to the states with his life. He did, however, make it home one leg short- an immediate and constant symbol of the limits of his power and his own mortality.
