  a little info on playing a deaf character
  
  yes, he is quite deaf.
  yes, it does have influence on how he communicates.
  but does it affect how your character interacts with him?
  
  not much.
  
  valentin was not born deaf, and he lip reads. there a few solid differences between someone born deaf and someone who is not-- a person who was born deaf has never heard spoken word before, and therefore may not speak clearly or may not speak at all. someone who was deafened later in life (at least after learning to speak) will have an easier time speaking, pronouncing, and dealing with spoken word. it also depends if the person lives in a solidly deaf community, a hearing community, or in some cases, both.
  
  so, long story short:
  
  your character does not need to resort to writing him notes as a sole form of communication.
  if they know proper ISL, great! but it's rather unlikely that they do.
  all they need to do is provide eye contact, and speak clearly. he will do the rest.
  if valentin is not looking at your character, he will not understand them. simple as that.
  if they need to get his attention, tapping works. if in line of sight, waving works.
  if in neither line of sight, nor touching distance, stomp the floor or hit the wall. vibration works.
  
  otherwise? he's just like anyone else.
