RP response for Jess and Neo
Jess looked around the ice cream shop and smiled and the cheesy but cute ice cream stickers they put in the window. It reminded her of when she was a kid, and everyone in the neighborhood was running together after the ice cream truck.
Jess chose a cup with two scoops, because she couldn't choose between the flavors. One scoop was pistachio and the other was mint chocolate chip. Since they were both green, it almost looked like she had gotten two scoops of the same flavor.
She tried to be polite and let Neo order first, but then after five minutes of Neo trying to decide on a flavor, and the poor teenager behind the counter starting at them both awkwardly, Jess shook her head and laughed.
"The place will be closed before you decide. I'm going to go ahead and order and I'll be over there," she said, pointing to a table. Neo was standing to the right of her in line. As she passed around her in the narrow area between the counter and the bars that keep the line going in the right direction, Jess gently placed her hands on either side of Neo's torso--almost as low as her waist, but not quite--in order to ease the transition of moving around her without having to walk all the way around. She squeezed by her in the tight space, flashing a quick smile for the moment that she was behind her back, a smile brought on by the fact that an excuse had presented itself for her to flirtatiously touch the woman who had recently inspired quite a few of Jess' spontaneous, random, quiet smiles in private. The touch also served to nonverbally communicate that Jess was not actually annoyed with Neo for taking so long to pick out her flavor. She was just playing with her.
Jess' hands were cold, as they had just been propped up against glass under which the ice cream flavors were displayed. When she touched Neo, she noticed her body's warmth against her hands.
Jess came out on the other side of Neo and placed her hands on the counter.
"I'll have a scoop of pistachio, and a scoop of mint chocolate chip," she said to the worker. "In a cup, please."
When Neo made up her mind and ordered chocolate ice cream with peanut butter cups, of course, she wished she had gotten that instead. Especially since they didn't have an open bucket of pistachio ice cream in the front, even though it was on the menu, so they had to go to the back to get it; therefore Neo's order came out first.
Jess looked enviously at Neo's peanut butter cups, and fortunately, Neo noticed her looking at them and generously gave her a bite.
Once Jess got her ice cream, Neo led them outside, and they sat down on a beach. Jess enjoyed her two scoops, and offered Neo a bite of each one too.
Neo offered to help Jess study psychology, after stating that she was "not very book smart--or smart in general."
Looking up, Jess locked eyes with Neo, and raised her eyebrows in disbelief.
"Oh I disagree, I think you're very smart, judging by your card playing rep," Jess said, eyeing her with a playful smile. "And you're good with people. That's what psychology is all about. People." Jess took another bite of ice cream, thoughtfully. She looked up.
'And yes, I can use all the help I can get," she said, looking back down at her ice cream. Her eyes flit quickly up to Neo's face and then back down.
She was telling the truth about the first part. She really did think Neo was smart and good with people. But she was lying about the second part. She was making straight A's. She didn't need any help studying. But she wanted an excuse to be alone in a room with Neo. If they ever were, she wasn't sure exactly what would happen, but the possibilities made her mind race. And her heart. And it couldn't hurt to have help studying, right?
It will definitely make studying more fun, that's for sure, she thought, her eyes sparkling with mischievousness, looking at Neo, spooning another bit of ice cream into her mouth.
Neo brought Jess' attention to the sky, and Jess, looking around at it too, agreed that it was going to be a beautiful night. Her eyes landed on a flock of black birds flying towards the orange sun.
"So, why'd you choose to get into psychology?" Neo asked Jess. Jess stopped trying to think of clever lines, and seriously considered the question. She looked away, silent for a long moment. Then finally, she looked back over at Neo, mentally measuring her, trying to decide whether to give an honest answer, or a funny answer. Neo's dark brown eyes looked warm and compassionate, so she went with honest. She took a deep breath and started talking.
"Everyone always says they want to help people," she told Neo, looking at her. "And it's that, but... it's deeper. I have an urge. A need. It's like...this thing...inside of me. I don't know how to explain it. It's like this ball of energy, or, or--light, and it doesn't have anywhere to go. And I think it's gonna drive me crazy sometimes. And it's this thing, where...I need to comfort someone. If I see someone that's sad, or in pain, or lonely, or nervous, that ball of energy inside me goes crazy, and it glows brighter, and it expands, and it's like I can't even contain it. I get this ache at the very top of my stomach, and I have to hug that person. I have to comfort that person. I have to try to make them feel better. And if I can't--I keep thinking about it for days. And if there's no one to comfort, and everyone around me is happy, then I get sad. I start wasting away. I can't see the meaning in life. And I go looking for someone to comfort." Jess took a breath. She needed it, she had been talking for a long time. She had been talking with her hands, and she put them down, in her lap.
She looked at Neo. I probably sound like a crazy person,Jess thought. She probably thinks I'm crazy now. She'll probably make some polite excuse to leave. Ball of light inside--what am I thinking? I should have said, "... because I'm a little crazy myself." "Why did you choose psychology?" "Because I'm a little crazy myself. Ha ha ha." That's the perfect answer. I'm going to have to remember that for next time. Does Neo think I'm crazy now? Am I crazy? Jess wondered, gazing into Neo's brown eyes. Her mind was racing a mile a minute, but her face looked deceptively calm and patient, as she waited for Neo's reply.
Personality: A nurturing person, a caretaker. And someone who enjoys vulnerability in other characters. -
