Triston Fugam

Backstory

• Triston Fugam was born in the northern parts of the Tail Villages, a rural community that lined a great meandering river known as the Tail. Few travelers and traders ever visited the village, and those who stayed would quickly depart within the week. It was a secluded and peaceful life. But at a young age, Tris realized an inevitable and well-known truth about his community: people were leaving, and its population was declining. He asked his father why, but received a lecture on love and care instead. Caring for others, his father said, was what would keep the bonds between villagers strong, and lead them to feel desire to stay. His family thus had no concern about Tris sharing the departed's fate; the boy had a naturally empathetic, caring, and attentive personality.
  
  In his teenage years, as was village tradition, Triston was introduced to necromancy. It was simple bone reanimation at first, using fresh toes and pinkies. As Tris learned with his peers, more progressive techniques were taught. Tris, true to his personality, took a liking to reverse-necrosis (reverting and reforming dead tissue) and blood transfusion (control of blood circulation and flow; he used this to prevent hemorrhage).
  
  The village never succeeded in bringing a villager back to life. Triston’s family, the Fugams, were considered one of the community pioneers. After Fuad Fugam restored eyesight to a deceased man by injecting photorefractive compounds, he declared that resurrection was only five years away. When "Big-Nose" Heinrich restarted respiratory function in the lungs of a girl’s corpse, that number became two years. (To this day, the girl could still be heard breathing in an undisclosed ritual room.) But when Maoil Fugam failed his landmark experiment, resulting in the secret cremation of the puppet-stitched body, that number was pushed back again to ten.
  
  Triston eventually realized the obsession. He then imagined, and dreaded, the day where his care for others would outweigh his commonsense of death. Knowing himself, he was sure that day was near. So just before the third decade of his life, Triston packed his bags, and left the village.
