    • While John tries to act like nothing in the world scares him, he is actually scared of sickness and disease. He avoids folks that cough or even sniffle with allergies. He avoids corpses. He avoids doctors. He's only been terribly ill a couple times in his life and that feeling of not being able to fully function (and somehow being stuck in that state forever) is horrible.
  • Born and raised in Texas to a poor family that had a whole mess of kids. His father worked as a ranch hand and by the time J.R. was 10, he was hired on as well to help bring in more money.

    There was always something "not quite right" about him and the boy had a cruel and vicious streak. When he was 11, his father caught him tormenting a calf for no other purpose than amusement. He got a good whippin' for it, but it didn't seem to help much other than to make him hide it better from his father. Still, the rancher they both worked for got on his case several times for being abusive to the animals.

    When he was 15, he took an interest in the rancher's 14 year old daughter. But when she wasn't immediately receptive to that interest, he took out his frustrations on one of the ranch's horses, whipping it so terribly that it was permanently blinded in one eye.

    There was little doubt in anyone's mind who had done this, and after a heated argument, his father and the rancher both told him in no uncertain terms he was no longer welcome there. He has bounced around from town to town, job to job. Sometimes managing to get himself fired. Sometimes just up and quitting when something pissed him off. Or right after someone in town ended up dead.

    There are no official murder charges against him. But there's a few towns he's certainly not too keen on returning to.

    Now he finds himself down to just a few dollars and headed to Kansas looking for work. A job with the railroad and the transient nature of the camps suits him just fine...
