    Braver than Most
    Silverton Lawrence Rexford was born in southern California on March 3rd of 1958 to Cecilia (Sissy) and Lucas Silverton. Raised with two older sisters, Silverton was the last born. His home life and childhood were better than most, and he knew he was loved and raised well. Joining the Military was a choice that he himself made, and he made it early.

    He'd just entered the ending stages of his earliest rank of Private and was on his way to Private 1st Rank when a dark and harsh reality embedded itself into his life.
    When returning from P.T one afternoon and walking into the showers to get cleaned up, he walked in on an extremely immoral scene. Several of the older Privates were engaging in homosexual misconduct and were caught in the act. However, these men were not new to being walked in on, that was clear. They quickly blocked off Silverton's escape and subdued him. Had he not just returned from P.T, he might have been able to fight them off, however, he was already physically exhausted and the 5 older men were able to beat him down and restrain him easily. By personal opinion, Silverton would have said he got off easy. He was certain they had all meant to sexually assault him, but circumstances only allowed one of the men to have his way.
    However, even the one man getting off gave Silverton everything he needed to pin them with Rape. When they left him, in pain and bleeding, he had the evidence with him. He went to a commanding officer with a sample of semen and proof of internal injuries. Within days they found the man who'd lead the assault, interrogated him and found out the rest of the attackers. With the help from the other victims, of which there were more than 8 people, the tracked down the attackers and gave them a choice. Go to Prison, or be given a Dishonorable Discharge with the promise of never seeing employment. They chose Dishonorable Discharge and were promptly kicked from service.
    Silverton and the other victims went silent about the whole ordeal and continued onward with their service.

    Rough Road Ahead
    Silverton had since unconsciously blocked out the memory of that event and another replaced it. It was a steady rise through the ranks, and he learned the equally vicious lesson of friends made and lost to war. The mental wounds were inflicted and healed, inflicted again and healed again. The hard shell that defined his later personality took form and on a particularly peaceful night, that shell that he had successfully formed was almost shattered.
    Two of the four Barracks was directly hit by Mortar attack...and each had contained 50 or so men and women. Out of the chaos, Silverton was able to bring some order and organize the survivors into retaliation. They won. But not without a hideous amount of casualties. One of the people killed in the bombing was Silverton's superior, Colonel John Ward. Whenever Silverton was debriefed on the details of the attack, he had no idea that they had lined him up for the next person to take the rank. It was the most bitter ceremony he'd ever experienced and was in no way pleased that he had taken the rank. In fact, he felt less than deserving.

    Saving Lives, within and without
    It was a couple weeks later that Silverton's Commanding Officer gave him orders to take leave. Silverton had never taken leave in his entire career. The thought was appalling to him. Leave? Take time off? When there were people fighting and dying? He tried to decline, but it was made an order. He packed and was on a plane leaving out for the United States within the next 5 hours, along with five Staff Sergeants who he was somewhat acquainted with.
    He did take time to visit his family, who had stayed in contact with him. His sisters now had husbands and children of their own, who were thrilled to finally meet their 'Uncle Silver'. Later that same evening, the Sergeants came to pick him up, and he had to remind them of their ranks when they picked up on the 'Uncle Silver' and attempted to tease. They managed to cajole him into going with them to pick up a couple drinks at a bar. He wasn't fully into it, but he accepted, if only to loosen up and forget that he wasn't protecting his country.
    It was that evening that his life was affected once again, and this time, it did break his iron shell. Against his will, the Staff Sergeants had paid $500 to get him an hour with a local prostitute. He was completely unaware of this however, until they ditched him, and he was left alone in a room with what looked like an 18 year old girl. Though she tried to persuade him otherwise, he was in no way interested in sleeping with her. After several minutes, he managed to get her to talk with him. Before the hour was over, she had almost nearly dropped all pretense of seduction and actually opened up somewhat. What he learned disturbed him greatly.
    She had been born to a prostitute and raised as a prostitute. She had been 'self employed', making her own pay and rules since she was old enough to be used. She had never truly been allowed into the outside world, accept to go about to hook in clients. She had seen a good deal of the outside world, but had never been given a higher education of it. She wanted out...but was too afraid to run. Her name was Jade Carmine.
    When the timer rang, the door unlocked, and Silverton hesitantly stood to leave. He didn't want to leave now. He wanted to free this young woman. He could see it in her eyes. She had just made a true friend and didn't want him to leave. She asked if he would be around, and unsure of what he wanted to do, he answered "maybe", and left.
    He had a problem ahead of him. His fellow sergeants had just exposed a under-aged prostitution ring. If he called down the fire now however, Jade would likely be arrested, as she was past the age of consent and would be considered guilty. The sergeants would get in trouble for this. He needed to make sure that they were aware of what they had done, and the implications of their actions. They had officially and completely lost his trust.
    The next day, he made his decision. He would give this girl a chance. He paid out $6,000 to have her for the night. He picked her up, and instead of taking her back to the condo he was renting, he took her to the beach. It took her a while to fully drop the persona, but by the time they were walking back to the car, he got to meet the actual Jade. He then ordered takeout and took her back to the condo. She ate as though she hadn't eaten in days. He introduced her to TV, as well as other parts of basic human existence. She was enthralled by them. When he introduced her to an actual soft, comfortable bed, she was asleep in minutes. How could his heart feel so whole, and yet...so broken?
    He didn't sleep that night at all, and the next morning after introducing her to coffee, he had already made his plans for the week. He was going to show Jade as much of life as he could. He knew that if she had some confidence, she would flee her prison as quickly as a cat out of a bathtub full of cold water.
    It was that same night that he paid out $8,000. She was stunned by this. She wanted to know why. Why was he doing this for her. He wanted her to experience life. To see what it could be. She was confounded by this. This time, he took her to the beach and then back to the condo. She seemed almost unwilling to accept that he could cook. He enjoyed it. He just never got the chance. By the time the food was ready and she'd devoured half of it, Silverton had come to accept two realities. He was an extremely lonely man. And he was head over heels in love. Over the rest of dinner, they discussed more about themselves and showed realities that only made the situation more hopeless for Silverton. They finished out the evening by watching yet another movie. But neither of them seemed to be able to focus on the movie. It was clear that she had never experienced true, deep connection. It was intoxicating for both of them, and quickly boiled over.
    By morning, neither of them wanted to leave. He had shared something with someone that he had never thought to share with anyone. He had two and a half more days. He meant to make them count. He showed her as much of life in those days as he could, and neither of them could help the growing bond between them. He kept his relationship with Jade silent, as the reality was far too harsh. He was military. She was essentially, a slave. He was trying his best to free her...but once he did...he would likely never see her again. The thought of marrying her crossed his mind more than once...however...it couldn't be. He wouldn't be able to give her a life. The gap in age was just far too much. She was just entering her prime. He was far gone from his. He loved her too much to bind her to that, though he knew she would say yes if he ever asked.
    The day came, and after a night of laughter and normality, he was forced to say goodbye. It broke him. Looking down at her before he departed, he handed her $300 and willed her to make a life for herself. He only prayed that she would. It was a silent trip back to the airport, and his fellow soldiers couldn't get a word out of him, though they tried. It was the hardest thing he'd ever done, stepping back into his purpose and duty and silently sealing up the hard shell again. Nobody recognized Silverton when he returned to base. Even his commanding general couldn't get any info out of him. Silverton gave Jade a week. Then he called it in and the building was silently infiltrated and the business brought down. His sources never did find trace of a young woman with fiery green eyes.
