Story: When she was 4 years old, her family traveled from Bergen in Norway to New York in America to get away from poverty and the plague that was terrorizing the streets of Bergen. They survived the rough seas and made it to port where they could start their new lives in the Land of the Free. They moved to the Minnesota territory on the search of land, and work. They found housing at a cattle ranch where Marie’s father and mother were allowed to work. Marie grew up on Wiltington Ranch and she learned english from the family that owned the ranch. She played with the sons of the owner and because she was the only girl she became more boy-like. Instead of playing with dolls and learning how to sow, she learnt how to ride horses and shoot with guns. She soon became responsible for herding the cattle from each pasture with the other sons before her mother died from a mysterious illness when she was 17.
