LIFE IS A GAMLE
AND HE'S IN IT TO WIN IT ________________ Jonah Briar was born to the couple Nat and Bruce Briar. They had recently bought their first home in the suburbs of Gotham and was truly starting their life, forming their own family. The joy was short lived thought: When he had barely passed the age of 1, they were all on the way home, when the brakes suddenly didn't work and there was nothing to do. It might have been late, but someone luckily saw the crashed and called 911. What exactly happened in those moments before the first responders arrived is not certain, but only Jonah survived. How is beyond anyone, since he was so small and the crash so absolutely horrible. The driver, his father, was killed on impact, but the mother lived for at least 15 minutes following that, which was clear as she was found partially on her way to check on her son in the backseat. It was not only the fact that Jonah survived a crash that no one should have survived, but he did so without any trauma to him. As soon as they had assured that everything was alright, which took longer since he had no obvious injuries to his body leading to worries of internal trauma instead, he was handed over to his grandfather, whom his parents had assigned as godfather too. His grandfather was a good man, but a busy one. The first many years, Jonah did grow up with him, but he was rarely present and his childhood consisted mostly of nannies and babysitters. That ended at the age of 7, when his grandfather had to go overseas for work ― and he couldn't bring a young boy. He probably could, but Jonah learnt later that he probably had no wish to bring him; at least not big enough. That marked the beginning of his journey through the foster care system. He knew, even at that age, that he was abandoned, even if he didn't understand it completely. He was dropped off and suddenly he was nothing. He was polite, but slightly too old for most couples that came by and before he knew it, he had travelled through a number of families. Some good, some bad, but most important nowhere to stay. It was not that he wasn't a good kid, he was just never the kid, constantly unwanted. All who had ever wanted him was his parents and they were no more. Jonah's abilities manifested rather early. It came naturally to him and he didn't think much of it. He knew that it was something that he should keep a secret, of course, but at least it could keep him company. He had a thing for board games and playing cards early on. In the beginning, he would be the quiet kid, occupied with a deck of cards in the corner, but as he grew older, especially as he arrived at yet a new foster home at 14, he started to open up: and rebel. With his new siblings, he fell into a crowd; it was not wrong per se, but it was not great either. For the first time, though, he felt like he found friends, people he could be close to, and together they went roaming in the night. Most of the times, it was harmless. It was running around with loud music and alcohol, but it slowly turned into more than just the usual fun and games. Jonah wished he cared, but he also realised that he lost that a long time ago: and now he finally had something he found fun, something that drew him in, a place where he was wanted even if it was for his abilities that made him a natural talent, all that they needed. Somehow, Jonah ended up staying there until he was 18, but he was never fully adopted. Instead, he was suddenly on his own ― and he was fine with it. He had learnt enough and he saw it as finally reaching freedom. Now, he could make his own life, his own future, and he damn well intended to do that to its fullest. Since then, he has been on the road. From the friends and foster siblings, he has created a rather vast, but solid network of people, often like him, out to gamble and out to scam others. He prefers simply gambling, but he knows that he's just as good at scamming people. He prefers to keep it on a smaller scale, even if he got a mad taste for it when he was younger and still does it from time to time to this day. He prefers scamming the bigger man, the large corporations, but he has no issue with looking you in the eye and lying to you if necessary. He has made quite a reputation for himself in the underground world as always having a trick up his sleeve, always being ready even if you don't see it coming yourself. He rarely stays put, even if he moves through many of the same cities, Gotham being the one he often returns to as the closest thing to a home base; at least to catch up on some sleep and visit his parents' graves. He keeps his personal life at a distance, only keeping those he knows close, but trusting them even to a point where it becomes a blind trust, but a band of thieves only works with a certain level of trust. He enjoys this free life, he enjoys managing to get away and still not getting caught, he enjoys the money that follows, there's really nothing to say against it. As long as he has himself, the only person he can truly trust and rely on, then everything will work out. |

|Kinetic energy generation and manipulation|
Jonah possesses the ability to convert the potential energy stored in an inanimate object into pure light kinetic energy, thus "charging" that item with highly explosive results. He prefers to charge smaller objects, such as his ever-present playing cards, as the time required to charge them is greatly reduced and they are much easier for him to throw. The only real limitation to this ability is the time required to charge the object: the larger it is the more time it takes to charge. Most charging takes place through direct skin contact. The power of his explosions is dependent on the mass of the object he is charging: for example, a charged playing card explodes with the force of a grenade. Jonah can also use his mutant abilities to accelerate an object's kinetic energy instead of converting its potential energy; for example, he can charge a staff with enough kinetic energy and power to level a house. Jonah's ability to tap into kinetic energy also grants him incredible superhuman physical attributes (strength, speed, reflexes and reactions, agility, flexibility, dexterity, coordination, balance, and endurance), as his body constantly generates bio-kinetic energy and so is perfectly constructed for constant motion. This gives him an added edge that he has used to his advantage by developing a unique acrobatic fighting style. The charged potential energy always in his body grants him the ability to build up charges of static electricity, and shields his mind from detection and intrusion by even the strongest and most powerful telepaths. The shield has the added effect of destabilising touch-based abilities. Jonah also possesses an unusually strong and irresistible hypnotic charm that allows him to exert a subtle influence over sentient beings, leading them to believe what he says and agree with his suggestions. The hypnotic charm does not work on those who know about it. |
