With an older sister and a younger brother, Ethan is the middle child, of a prominent merchant family. He prefers to be called by his middle name Martin, though his father insisted he introduce himself as Ethan. Ethan only did this if he was within earshot of his father, everyone knew him by Martin or Marty. Growing up he spent his time between the bookstore his uncle managed and his fathers fine jewelry stores. The oldest of three males among his generation, his father and uncle often joked about him having to take over both businesses, since he was a great help to both.

They were truly a family business, as all of his siblings and cousins helped out, though growing up he preferred the bookstore. There was something about crawling between the storage shelves in the back with a new book and spending his short break from school and work, lost in the pages of some adventure.

War changes everything. All the males but the youngest were sent off, including Ethan. His father served with a rich benefactor during the war, a long time family friend, and came to some sort of agreement in their time together. Once things settled after the war, and everyone was back home, the businesses had to be adjusted. In order to avoid losing the bookstore and all three locations of the jewelry stores, the benefactor, a noble family, took Ethan in to work for him, helping to manage his household. In return of his services, the family businesses were safe, being funded by the benefactor, so long as Martin served him. It was an odd arrangement if one looked closely, and soon Ethan found out just how odd it was...
