Background Information
Part of Madeline, also referred to as "Badeline" by fans (though not her canon name), is the main antagonist of the 2018 platform game, Celeste. Initially, Badeline is a direct obstacle of Madeline's, the main protagonist, who is determined to climb Celeste Mountain. It is worth nothing that, for clarity's sake, she is referred to by her fan-given, OOC name in this sheet, but her actual, in-universe name is also 'Madeline'.
Story
Madeline Stone is a young woman struggling with anxiety, depression, and self-doubt. Wishing to overcome her mental health challenges and embark on a journey of self-discovery, she decides to attempt to climb Celeste Mountain, a mountain rumored to be extraordinarily satisfying for climbers to complete. Not knowing the true basis of these rumors, Madeline opted to give the mountain a go, setting aside a week of time from work to drive to the grand mountain.
The climb starts off relatively simple, with Madeline making her way through an abandoned city near the mountain's base, encountering another traveler, Theo, from Seattle. The two converse briefly before Madeline continues on, eventually coming across old ruins. While exploring the ruins, she encounters an entity that looks uncannily like herself. This doppelgänger reveals that she is indeed a part of Madeline—specifically, the embodiment of her pragmatism, having been supposedly given a physical form by the mountain's power. Badeline insists that Madeline is incapable of climbing the mountain, but Madeline refuses to accept this. This causes her to unintentionally provoke Badeline, who resorts to stopping Madeline by force.
However, Madeline is able to narrowly escape Badeline, fleeing from the old ruins in a panic. Desperate for help, she dials her therapist on a payphone, but as she tries to explain the situation, she suddenly realizes that she has been dreaming. She wakes up just outside the ruins, having fallen asleep after passing through the abandoned city. This time, she calls her mother instead, who is able to calm Madeline down and reinvigorate her desire to overcome obstacles and continue the climb. However, she is determined to avoid another encounter, so she sidesteps the ruins and continues her climb up the mountain.
After some time, she arrives at an old hotel owned by Mr. Oshiro, a ghost that does not appear to realize how much disrepair the hotel has fallen into. He repeatedly attempts to convince Madeline to stay in his hotel, all of which Madeline declines. Madeline, despite this, decides to assist Mr. Oshiro with cleaning a few rooms of the hotel. Theo, feeling uncomfortable around Mr. Oshiro, chooses to sneak away and tries to persuade Madeline to do the same, but she remains firm in helping Mr. Oshiro. After completing all tasks for Mr. Oshiro, he tries one last time to convince Madeline to stay, but this would not go according to plan.
This time manifesting in the real world, Badeline emerges from the mirror, helping Madeline leave the hotel, but she carelessly belittles Mr. Oshiro in the process, causing him to become enraged and attack Madeline. Madeline is able to flee from Mr. Oshiro long enough for him to calm down, and the two part ways afterwards. Madeline then reunites with Theo, and the two find a temple. Due to her past experiences thus far, Madeline is hesitant to enter, but Theo disagrees, believing that it would be gain traction on social media. She agrees to accompany him, but matters go awry when the two become trapped within the mirrors in the temple, with Theo becoming trapped in a crystalline cage. As Madeline searches for a way to reach Theo, she encounters Badeline once again, who tells her that Madeline's mind has caused far more entities to manifest in the temple: monsters named 'Seekers'. Madeline and Badeline then argue, with Badeline refusing to assist Madeline.
Eventually, Madeline reunites with Theo, and together they manage to escape the Mirror Dimension. Encouraged by Theo, Madeline attempts to leave Badeline behind, declaring that she no longer needs her. This, however, has the opposite effect, enraging Badeline instead of providing comfort. In her rage, Badeline becomes extremely aggressive, ultimately sending Madeline tumbling back to the very bottom of the mountain.
After the fall, Madeline encounters an old woman who offers her some guidance. Through their conversation, Madeline comes to a crucial realization: Badeline embodies her anxiety and fear, not her pragmatism. With this new understanding, Madeline recognizes that she must accept Badeline and address their differences rather than trying to abandon her. Badeline initially resists this approach, attacking Madeline multiple times.
Despite the attacks, Madeline perseveres and manages to confront Badeline effectively. Upon admitting defeat, Badeline offers to leave Madeline alone. However, Madeline rejects this offer, expressing a desire for them to work together instead. In a moment of mutual understanding and acceptance, the two hug, solidifying their newfound cooperation.
Now working together, the two are able to recover all of the lost ground, and they are able to bond and reconcile on the way, with Badeline properly apologizing for the trouble that she caused Madeline.
Soon enough, Madeline and Badeline reach the summit, with the two taking a moment to enjoy the view. Although Badeline fears returning home, Madeline reassures her, stating that Badeline will always be a part of her. Madeline promises to always listen to her, even if Badeline will lose her physical body upon leaving the mountain, and she promises that things will change for the better.
Later, Madeline decides to bake a strawberry pie for Theo, Badeline, Granny (the old woman), and Mr. Oshiro, who apologizes for his actions earlier on.
The pie is an absolute success, with Madeline's friends all believing it to be the best thing that they've ever tasted. Madeline, satisfied with her journey, then chooses to return home. Granny and Mr. Oshiro bid her farewell, but Madeline and Theo choose to stay friends, keeping in touch with one another.
Agents of the Multiverse
Compared to what was to come, the events of Celeste Mountain were trivial. Four years after the climb, Madeline returns to the mountain with Theo and Alex (Madeline's girlfriend and Theo's sister) to visit Mr. Oshiro, which has a memorial dedicated to Granny, who passed away. On that night, a sweeping corruption began to spread through the world, causing Celeste Mountain to release massive amounts of power. For the first time in years, Badeline resurfaces, attempting to save her friends. However, she fails, and she loses track of the others in the chaos. Badeline is the only one to be rescued by the Agents of the Multiverse before the destruction of her home universe, #ST175.
