    Born in Mystic Falls to a couple, her mother Kang Lian Hui, and her father Han Yi Chen, she had a rather uneventful childhood until the age of 9 when her parents' relationship took a turn for the worse. Her father had a dark past that would drive a rift between them. They filed for divorce, and her father moved to New York, taking sole custody of Vanessa.

    Living with her father in New York was a complicated and uncomfortable upbringing. Her father is involved in gang activity and lucrative black market trading as the head of the Twenty-one Daggers Chinese triad. Raised in the company of the violent criminal underbelly of New York's feuding gang culture, Vanessa's personality was moulded by harsh lessons in street smarts and a street reputation-based system. She had to develop a cold, black and white outlook on life, where only the strong had a claim to power, riches and respect.

    By the age of fourteen, Vanessa had become a master of her trade, selling drugs and her body. She also worked closely with her father, acting as a proxy and liaison between The Twenty-one Daggers and other criminal organisations. She never finished school; her education was based on observation and on job experience instead of a formal education. As she grew older and made her way through the higher ranks of her father's triad, she became very good at the logistics of illegal goods and gathering information on what's what and who's who.

    At the age of seventeen, during a meeting between the Twenty-one Daggers and a rival criminal organisation, things got heated and amidst the chaos, when fists started flying and guns were drawn, Vanessa attempted to block a jab made by one of the opposing gang members who was a vampire. Upon contact with this person, a surge of power filled every fibre of her being, and a wave of fire erupted from her, injuring foe and friend alike, awarding her the nickname "The Phoenix". This prompted her to figure out just how and why this happened, thus sending her on a journey into discovering what she was.

    Vanessa remembered a journal that her mother had given to her when she was a child, which she had ignored out of resentment for her mother. Little did she know, the journal contained an explanation of what she is, a history of their family lineage of witches, instructions on spells, alchemy, rituals, and witchcraft. She studied this journal and has grown into an exceptional witch, even getting her into the educational practice of cultivating herbs and collecting magical artefacts.

    She has since taken an interest in alchemy, mixology, and motorcycles. She bought a motorcycle which she can attach to a truck that she has converted into a mobile home and a pop-up bar named "Haunted bottles" where she runs a business as a travelling bartender, moving state to state to serve her signature cocktails to humans, selling iligal drugs, and providing more magically inclined services to those of more supernatural needs, developing a reputation for being someone who can get anything for the right price.

    Upon her mother's sudden death, she became the sole property owner of the house in Mystic Falls by default as next of kin and has moved back to her home town. She has also become the legal guardian of her younger sister, Meilin Kang.
