"Am I a man pretending to be an angel?"
"Or an angel pretending to be a man?
An assassin from a religious order of fanatics (the Order of St. Dumas), Sean Andrew Watts, "Azrael" (meaning "The Judgement of God")was raised to believe that he was an "angel among men" whenever he donned his armored uniform. Designed to enhance the fear of him being an actual angel of vengeance and destruction as well as protect him in this modern age of weaponry, his training is different than most assassins. Rather than take a silent, unseen approach, he instead has a more direct, warrior-like approach to strike terror in those that witness it. In modern daylight, given preparation, his uniform is not terribly intimidating. During the nighttime, when he is most often active, bursting through shattered glass with a fiery sword while a hoarse voice shouts out with rage about Judgement and Punishment for crimes you know you are guilty of, it can be more psychologically effective.
The role of Azrael is heredital, passed down from father to son since the times of the Crusades (for which the focus was originally designed for). After the group split away from the Catholic and Orthodox Church, it became a secular group of religious madmen who began to truly believe that each Azrael was a real angel. The current and last Azrael, Sean Andrew, was to be the pinnacle of their mixture of traditional ways with modern technology to be a new template for all Azrael's after. However, Sean had a flaw as an enforcer-assassin: A sense of right and wrong. He alone was the only one of his heritage to renounce the Order and resist them. Exiled and excommunicated from the Order for both committing an act of mercy as well as defending it, in an instant he lost his family and his entire life. However, he reacted true to his core, as any Azrael should be: He condemned them in return and sought out to destroy the Order. Over a decade later, the last of the Order seems to be shattered and crumbled.
This has shattered the faith of the Order of St. Dumas, some saying that Sean is truly Azrael for passing judgement on the Order itself. Others say he is a traitor and wish to eradicate him. At 30, Sean now wanders as a vigilante/assassin when needed, though he generally just moves through life. It is difficult to see the kind soul crying inside the vengeful assassin, but it is there. In his love of poetry and writing, of sketching and music, his gentleness to kind souls. But his rage is something he struggles with intensely. He seeks truth. Peace. He follows the path he feels God grants him, hoping to find balance of some kind. The anger will destroy his sanity. He knows this. Like a person with cancer, he strives to survive despite it.
Only time will tell if he will prevail.
