On the third of January, the Harwell family was surprised to see that the little boy they had planned for was.. not a boy at all. Melissa Harwell gave birth to a beautiful baby girl at precisely 3 AM in the state hospital. Since the couple had already settled and fell in love with the name Killian, it just stuck. She was raised in a very strict environment- what with her mother being a teacher and her father being a business man. Life in Nome was enjoyable, the family made a steady income. The expectations were grand and admittedly unrealistic. She was expected to keep focused and working at all possible free time, which led to her being in a very isolated state of mind for a big portion of her life. Throughout her schooling career, Killian remained on the higher percentile of students. This led to small amounts of bullying and letting her grow a small hostility toward her peers. At age 18, Killian was graduating high school in the top 10% of her class. Killian had followed the pressure at home and the scientific love in her heart to enroll in one of the best Medical Science colleges in the country. A year and a half into her schooling, the outbreak began, but the general public was uninformed of what it was, how you go it, or how to fix it. All they knew was that it was a death sentence. It became idle chatter over the four years it took for it to spill into the public, a thousand times worse. The government was forced to release the information. The outbreak consisted of a mutation bacteria that entered through a mosquito bite and into the blood stream, eventually eating its way out of your veins and into your flesh, essentially eating you from the inside out. They called it Banshee Leprosy. |
With the sudden news and a relatively new and steady job at a local laboratory in McAlester, Oklahoma, Killian and her team began trying to make an anti-toxin. Days turned into weeks, which turned into months, a year. Testing had finally been successful and the laboratory had cured Banshee Leprosy with a drug they named Abitox. The globe had been cured, and Killian couldn't have been more proud of herself. But making the drug was outrageously expensive, seeing as they had to use a whole, old, infected corpse to make enough doses for a single wing of a hospital. And that's when Harwell Inc. launched. At the base, the corporation seemed glossed over. All she saw was dollar signs and her greed took over. She declined the making of vaccinations and became very selective with how the drug was distributed. Killian announced on public television that the drug was extremely limited, and could only be given in stages - a lie. Vaccinations were tested and weren't taking - a lie. The price was coincidentally left out of the speech, and she resorted to using religion as a plea for making people's hearts melt. This is how the procedure would work; you'd get infected. You would come down to your local doctor, who'd then point you to a Harwell medical office. You'd be given a watered down version of the medicine, making the symptoms and a very small part of the disease leave your system immediately, no questions asked. You'd be advised to come back within a month. You'd feel better, even cured, until your month was due. You'd be forced to come back and take another dose. With every dose, your debt climbed until you hit three years of 'treatment' and were cured. And if you failed to make payments? You were first sent a friendly letter. If it persisted, you'd be pulled for 'emergency treatment' at the Oklahoma Harwell Inc. base and promptly interrogated for one last effort to get their money. If the effort failed, you were killed and recycled as a base for the next batch of medicine. Your debt? Handed down to your partner, or child. |
