The sentence 'He's actually really nice, once you get to know him', has been applied to Tom in abundance. To strangers it might it might be hard to see the appeal in Toms stiff composure, and reserved eyes. He doesn't say much, and when he does, it can be surprisingly harsh. He tends to correct people, and can seem a bit of a snob. He can come off as unfriendly, but what might be perceived as arrogance, is in most cases really just shyness.
Tom is introverted, and doesn't like to be out of his comfort zone. He feels secure behind his armor of sarcasm, and his ability to win an argument, which is why it is what most people see. But beneath that he is a kind and loyal friend to the few, that have had the patience to get to know him. Once you get used to his dry humour, he can also be funny, and not only in a sarcastic way. His love for litterature, is in some way an intellectual outlet for the well kept secret, that he is actually a bit of a romantic. Something he has carried out in real life only a few times. When just befriending someone makes him feel insecure, romance have seemed almost impossible for most of his life.
Tom always wears freshly ironed shirts, and in general dresses in classics. He has distinct opinions in what he does, and doesn't like, and will absolutely refuse to participate in something, he suspects he won't be good at. Without his habits, or 'rules', he feels eerie. He has always felt like that. It has its perks to be disciplined, though often he have had a sneaking feeling, that his need for control is more a restriction than an advantage.
