  Being the 3rd oldest of 4 princes have always been a challenge for him since he was not the one to success the throne the only duty he was told he had was to marry someone of importance - preferably a princess from another kingdom.
  So as a kid he was normally schooled like the others, he, however, found old texts amusing, and instead of running off doing what kids normally would do, he would read.
  He continued like this until his parents found him old enough to learn combat, in case he ever needed it. From there he found an interest in battle tactics and would spend the days on training different combat styles and tactics, and at night he would sit up till late and read either old legends or books about warfare, making him a great strategist.
  The talk of him getting married became a subject he tried to avoid since he did not see the purpose in having a woman by his side, he may not love or even feel attracted too. This made him turn down a lot of offers, making his parents, especially his dad furious. The King demanded that he'd marry the next suitable woman they found him, making him feel bitter and slightly angry at his dad. At that moment rumors and stories started to reach the castle about different beings, hiding among regular humans.
  Eyeing his opportunity he asked permission to take charge of the investigation of this, both to avoid getting married to someone he did not know, and also because he was intriguing. All the myths, legends and so on he had read through the years, may perchance be useful. The King, however, annoyed at the situation, agreed, even though he still demanded Cassius to marry, when it all was over.
  Therefore, Cassius does not mind seeing the situation expand more and more, giving him more work to do, so he both can ignore his King and actually do something he enjoys.. being it researching or executing someone without any kind of trial except his own judgment.
