Growing up, Hannah had always been considered "gifted" by her parents. In school, she was considered a nerd and often picked on by her peers for that and her heritage. Her parents, who run a small kebab shop, migrated from Afghanistan to America before she was born, and decided to anglify their daughter's first name, calling her Hannah rather than Hana. This didn't stop them from calling her Hana, usually combined with speaking to her in Dari. Hannah herself always preferred speaking English, and her parents' loving nickname for her also served as a reminder that she was different from her classmates.
Since she was always a smart girl, her parents - both of them Afghan immigrants - had their eyes set on her getting a scholarship, which would land her a full ride to medical school. However, it never surprised any of them when Hannah chose the violin over medical school, as the old, some might say slightly battered, violin was always her true love.
