Magic in and of itself exists within all living things, similar to that of a spiritual 'life essence'. Wizards are simply humans that have learned to channel this force, through the use of various tools and ways, and form it into something more precise. Spells can be cast, or potions brewed, by the use of channeling this essence. A good wizard, to cast a spell for example, has learned how to first properly gather this magical energy that flows around him. The wizard shapes it, draws in from his will and emotions, what he's feeling. Negative feelings (eg envy, avarice, hatred, or sometimes even lust) are easier to culminate, and are more often than not used to practice black magic. Once the energy is gathered, the wizard focuses his will and intent on his goal, what he plans to use the magic for. Lastly, the magic is then released from him. It is not dissimilar from that of using a firearm. One must load it, aim it, and then fire it.
In short, magic is utilized through three steps:1) Channel the magic.
2) Make intent.
3) Release it.
Tools can be used to help this process along. Circles are incredibly significant. They help to keep the magic one wants to focus inside of it, while keeping stray flowing magic on the outside, so as to not interfere with the spell one attempts to cast. They are useful in summoning entities, and can be made in a variety of ways. Chalk, salt, various metals, or even a number of people holding hands together is enough to work as viable circles. Rods and staves make it easier for the wizard to draw in and focus the magic he sends forth. William owns a few of each.
This is the type of magic that William has a particular specialty for. It is the act of forming links with particular objects or people, similar to the way the concept of a voodoo doll works. This provides the ability to locate missing objects or even missing people. Lost your precious family heirloom? William's your guy to find it. Find blood at your crime scene belonging to a suspect? William will have no problem tracking them down, though you may not like what he finds.
This is another flavor of magic that William is particularly adept in. This is the kind of magic you'd expect a magic user to use in a game of Dungeons and Dragons. Fire, Ice, Wind, Lightning... all that kind of fun stuff in the same branch as MAGIC MISSILE. It's big, flashy magic which comes in handy for battling demons and the like. This kind of magic can be used in a pinch, and can be used to produce shields as well as other defensive spells if necessary.
Of course, just having general knowledge in the arcane is useful enough on its own. Lifting curses, expelling demons and spirits, investigating hauntings, enchanting objects, and brewing potions are all in a day's work for William.
