• Background

  Ethan James Kennedy was conceived during an illicit affair between James Morgan and Claire Kennedy the night of the pair's Ten Year High School reunion. He has no knowledge of his mother's affair or his blood relation to James, and neither does Claire's husband, Michael Kennedy, which is precisely the way his mother intended it to stay, lest she put herself and her son on the fast track to ruin. That being said, Ethan has been raised calling Michael Kennedy "dad" and has no reason to suspect otherwise.
  
  James, in retrospect, had been content not knowing whether or not Ethan was his or Michael's. Parenthood was a responsibility he hadn't been ready for at 27, nor was it one he wanted at that point in time. So when Claire initially told him about her pregnancy, he panicked. The resulting strain that formed played one of several roles in what eventually led to Claire and James breaking off their affair.
  
  Parentage conflict aside, Ethan has led a privileged lifestyle in terms of opportunity and material wealth, but not to the point of spoiling him. Despite her shortcomings, his mother has done well to keep her son grounded in humility, teaching him the importance of gratitude, charity work, following his heart, and always doing what's right.
  
  His relationship with his dad Michael, however, is strained at best. The two are frequently at odds, a tension that stems from unfair expectations, Michael's constant absence, and the way the man treats his mother. While not the worst case of domestic abuse, the relationship between Claire and Michael was never a healthy one. They had their moments, and perhaps once upon a time they loved each other. But their marriage had been more out of convenience rather than one born of love, leaving Ethan to ultimately suffer the consequences of being raised within a dysfunctional household that wasn't nearly as ideal as it appeared to the rest of the world.
