    The MacRae family has always been an upstanding pillar of the Boston community. Garret's father takes his role as the head of the New England Freemasonry and current CEO of the family's insurance business and expected Garret to do the same. He was to enroll in Princeton, get his MBA, and come back to become his apprentice. As the eldest son, it was up to him to take over the company, but Garret had other intentions. He wanted to pursue art and open his own studio. Naturally, his father couldn't accept anyone interfering with his plans and in turn, threatened to take away Garret's trust fund.
    Luckily, his mother, being the 'neck' to the head of the household, convinced his father to keep him in the family funds if he goes to Princeton or somewhere closer to home. So, Garret went to a liberal arts college just outside Brooklyn so he could live a little. There he joined a fraternity where he and his new friends bullied the outcasts on campus. One of which was Damon Masters, a freshman who secretly was diagnosed with DID. He was supposed to Garret's roommate in his friends' 'Big Brother' program where along with the brothers in the frat being role models, they treat the freshmen like lackeys.
    Instead, Damon's kindness and vulnerability turned Garret's life around. Garret decided to take up a major in psychology to learn more about Damon's condition. Eventually, he became Damon's lover and eventually his caretaker upon his return to the Krieger Institute.
