• Background

  Luther Baptiste was born on the ice-moon of Europa where the only options open to a young man was the ice haulage industry or the Federation Navy. Having a thirst for adventure but not necessarily one to respect authority, Luther found himself on freighter Helios hauling ice and various goods to distant parts of the system.
  
  It soon became clear that the Helios wasn't just a regular cargo freighter. Her captain regularly accepted missions transporting less than legal items. Weapons, narcotics, animal parts, the only thing that was refused was the trafficking of living sentient beings. This put the freighter in the crosshairs of many a governmental organisation. Used to taking fire from and outmanouevering patrol ships, it was a dangerous life but not a boring life for a young man.
  
  But eventually their luck run out. Chased from system to system by an Alliance cruiser, the Helios met her fate on the desert planet of Kandor, crashing into the vast endless dunes. Luther was one of the handful of survivors who escaped the wreckage. Finding themselves with golden sand as far as the eye could see, they were faced with an impossible task. The ice stores were gone as was their water supply.
  
  Luckily, the Kandorian authorities had been alerted to the crash and dispatched a ship to search to secure the wreckage. The survivors were rounded up and immediately thrown in prison. After three years in jail, Luther and 3 of his prisonmates would be presented with an opportunity. Join the Kandorians.
  
  Space piracy was rife in that part of the system. Not just because of outlaws, but because different planets sanctioned their own pirates to attack the ships of their enemies (and sometimes friends). The Kandorians, with their high moral codes and sense of honour did not really partake in the activity of privateering but times were desperate and they were seeking to make a crew of equally desperate people. Those that if caught, could not be traced back to Kandors rulers.
