  • Triora had not seen or will ever see again a winter’s storm so raged and relentless as it did on the night of Amber’s birth. The ground trembled, fearing the devil offspring that walked on its surface — her parents hadn’t taken the news well, either, and dropped her off on a monastery doorstep before she could even begin teething.
    Men of God and virtue did their best to tame her into a proper young woman; her name was warm and close to nature, precious and seen as an adornment. She’d been taught to read and write and given plenty of sacred texts to study from, but, years of patience from plenty of caregivers was not enough to keep her from dipping into her truest callings. Amber’s one love, one constant comfort - magic.

    Accidents in a monastery were as lethal as a knife lazily scraping over a piece of thread — it was only a matter of time before the thinning rope snapped, and with it the collective patience, too. That’s why Amber made sure plenty of accidents happened.
    Priest Axel had been furious when frogs began appearing in his stew. He was an older man of crooked spine and whitening beard whose beliefs mirrored the Pope’s to a T. Sister Magdalene had told her that he was sent from up north to study in Italy and never left. (She’d also cleverly kept her mouth shut about his comments on the winter of Amber’s birth, but, the witch found out anyway.)
    Not to say that priest Axel was a righteous man. He was farthest from, in her eyes, actually. The five walls that held more secrets within than a brothel could ever dream of was the last place alleged witches and devil pleasers would ever live to see.

    ”Thou shalt not kill.”

    But they did. In the name of God and in the name of Christianity and in the name of Rome and the Holy Pope, three men were hanged during the celebrations of salvation. Amber didn’t stay around for much longer, and ditched the monastery only a few hours before a horde of bloodthirsty hounds snuck in.

    Amber would not kill God’s men, but, she wouldn’t protect them, either.
