• Personality

  Sophisticated, calm and cautious most of the time. Mia is well-read and well-spoken and prefers to think an answer through rather than rush into it.
  She has a natural grace and elegance in the things she says or does.
  She's cautious in what information she shares, due to the nature of what she is. She has no intent to cause harm, yet at the same time has come to terms with the fact that there is always a chance that things go South.
  Now, sometimes she does intend to cause harm. When she or those she loves are threatened, she is not afraid of retribution and she's willing to go pretty far to protect her and hers. If left in peace, however, she tries to be harmless.
  
  While independent, she is more influenced by her family than she herself realizes.

• Abilities

  She uses a kind of witchcraft where spells need to be prepared with all kinds of ingredients and rites. The more powerful ones also tend to be the more complex ones.
  What sets this apart from ineffective homeopathy is that witches like her have an innate magic that ties everything together into an effective spell.
  So while very powerful, she's also dependant on the right ingredients. And mistakes can be very dangerous.
  
  Once a month she also involuntarily shifts into the beast that runs in the family. In this state she is no longer human but simply bloodthirsty and ever hungry. She remembers very little afterwards and through the years shards of memory sort of blend together.
  The shifting can be marginally controlled through spells. These spells require very specific ingredients and preparation and can enhance consciousness during the shift, shortening the shift or, in extremely rare cases, skip it, though that spell is very hard to even get right and can't be done several months in a row without serious side-effects.
  
  Throughout the family the shift is mostly seen as a curse, though there are members that see it as a blessing that should be embraced. Mia is in the first category. She's not sure if she believes it's a literal curse, bestowed upon them at some point in time, but she sure isn't happy with it.
  
  Side effects of what she is included slightly increased strength in human form. She wouldn't be able to defeat a trained fighter, but think instead of her being able to lift objects that the average woman of her size should have quite a bit more trouble with. Another thing is that many small animals (and some larger ones, like horses) are instinctively nervous and sometimes fearful around her. She's learned not to take that too personal.

• History

  Born and raised in Slovenia, close to the town of Idrija. Her family, often called the Family, was a bit on the isolated side and consisted of werebeasts from all over the world; a Kastelic was supposed to marry another werebeast, so that he or she could become part of the Family and the chances were highest that a) the child was a werebeast as well and b) that no outsider learned of what they were. Children that didn't inherit it were welcome, though second-rate.
  The Family had a fair bit of land and lived in numerous small cottages on a large farm. Mostly kin, but some 'strays' as well. It was almost a village all on it's own.
  Many saw the werebeast as a gift, but in Mia's generation, as well as that of her parents, the tide was slowly shifting. Mia's generation in particular was very split in two; some went with the old ways, some saw it as a curse and craved a normal life. Where their grandparents obviously didn't have the modern-day luxury of being able to just go on a long weekend trip to a big city, the younger members of the Family did and this meant they got a taste of the bigger world early on.
  Mia was one of those people. Several city trips to Ljubljana showed her that she did not want to stay in the village her whole life.
  So from around the age of sixteen she was already doubling down on English, wanting to be able to go anywhere. She worked in a grocery store and diligently kept saving up.
  When she was twenty-one she left. It also meant that part of the Family practically disowned her, though others wished her luck on her endeavors.
  
  She left for America and stayed in various cities, such as Atlanta, Seattle, Portland and Scottsdale. She freelanced for a historical magazine and that allowed her to keep traveling and learn more about the world.
