• A Glimpse

  With a cerulean sky interspersed with few clouds high above a vast carpet of verdant greenery, the newborn morning sun’s gaze was just beginning to pierce through a new day’s first dew. Lush, dense vegetation stretching on for as far as the naked eye could see, only stopped by the encircling mountain ranges to the North and the East. From high up in the heavens the terrain below appeared rather picturesque, belying the dangers a jungle as overgrown as this one entailed.
  
  Turning her hand up to cover her face as a wisp of cloud whipped past, the elf blinked and shook her head, shaking off any fluffy white remnants. As they crested a ridge of the continent’s Northern mountain range, having passed over the sea and slipped between two colossal peaks, the seemingly untouched landscape came into view. Breathtaking to even one accustomed to stunning vistas, the eagle and his passenger cried out in joy. The massive bird exalting the view with an exuberant cry which could be heard for miles around, the great eagle tucked in its massive wingspan closer to its body and swooped down, riding a thermal which slipped over the mountainous ridge. The elf cried out in her own way, producing a high pitched ‘cree’ to emulate that of the bird, and her cry turned into a ‘whoop’ of glee as her mount turned its level glide into a downwards swoop.
  
  Racing downwards high above the mountain’s slope, the eagle’s aerodynamic form quickly picked up speed, causing its passenger to grip onto its feathers tighter and bury her face in the plumage of its neck. As the magical creature’s feathers ruffled in the steep descent’s gale, his passenger’s hair was whipped behind her as the strong winds buffeted her compact form astride his back.
  
  With her face buried into her friend’s feathers, a childish grin crested her lips as she felt the wind seek to tear her away. Knowing that even if she let go and let the wind take her that her mount would speed after her and catch her caringly in its talons, the dive from on high still brought chilling thrills. Despite her heightened reflexes and physique, the plunge nevertheless brought butterflies to her stomach- a feeling not possible when confined to the ground, much to her chagrin.
  
  As the deciduous tops became more distinct and filled his view, the eagle spread out his wings to their limit once more and tilted them upwards, pulling the angle of their descent back up and guiding them upwards as the air’s thermals caught his wings and provided lift. Laughing gaily into his feathers, the elf lifted her head and took in a deep breath. Taking in the veritable cornucopia of scents and smells brought forth on the wind, she leaned back and releasing her hands’ grip, stretched out her arms like that of an eagle.
  
  So the pair soared above the treetops of the jungle, neither having a care in the world at that moment in time. Far off in the distance, the imposing mountains of the Eastern range rose up high above the jungle’s treetops.
  
  Sighing contently, she stretched out and rolled her shoulders. Blinking, she settled her gaze in front of her once more, eliciting a tight-lipped frown to mar her delicate and refined features. Narrowing her gaze, she could make out the exit of the mountainous path between two of the taller peaks, which led to the only coastal port on this part of the continent. Her journey’s destination bringing her no sense of wonder or pleasure, the name of the tainted place in itself was enough to bring discomfort, Dûr’falas.
  
  Sensing his charge’s discomfort through their bond, the great eagle, Thrandinuil, cried out a hateful screech. Knowing of their destination in that it was a tainted and dark place of a deep-seated evil beneath the shores, it pained him to know that his temporary companion would have to be left to cleanse the land alone. The severity of the problem, and urgency of the Archdruids, kept his desire to fly back across the oceans heedless of his charge’s will at bay.
  
  Knowing that his presence would bring unwanted attention for the druidess he carried, Eryndiel, and possible dismay amongst the denizens on the other side of the mountain range, Thrandinuil slowed and as discussed, eventually came to land in a small clearing near the tunnel entrance of the path through the mountains.
  
  Leaning in once more and rubbing her cheeks against his smooth, hazel feathers, the elf wrapped her arms around his neck and gave him a warm hug. Enjoying the methodic breathing of the great beast, as well as the earthy scents of home upon his feathers, she softly spoke to him through her mind. ‘I know our paths part here, my friend, but creatures as grand as yourself belong far from such primitive evils. Hold your hunger if you can, as this forest’s inhabitants are more likely to carry poison in their veins than the savory juices of life.’ Pausing and holding back a tear, she continued; ‘If I shall fall or fail, they will know, and spare a glimpse at the nearby Eastern coast if you can should ships bringing others need guidance to accomplish what I could not.’
  
  Sorrowfully breaking the link, and untwining her spirit from his, Eryndiel let out a heavy breath and deftly slipped from atop him, landing on the soft jungle floor with quiet ease. Running her hands along his plumage and admiring him for one last time, she walked over to his head and briefly gazing into his crystalline blue eyes, bowed her head slightly in reverence. Thrandinuil replicated the gesture, and nuzzling the bridge of his beak against her gently, he looked at her caringly with his attentive eyes.
  
  Smiling wryly back at him, she slid her hands along the proud bridge of his beak and gave him a playful shove. Doing nothing more than slightly jarring his head, Thrandinuil gave a playful push back, lifting Eryndiel up lightly but not bowling her over. Giggling warmly, she gave him one last pat on his beak before stepping back and allowing him to take flight once more.
  
  Watching as the magnificent creature took to the skies and began his journey back home, Eryndiel took a calm breath and steeling her resolve, turned towards the stone archway of the path’s entrance, and strode towards it, knowing that before long it would lead her to Blackheart’s Reprieve and the ancient evil which lay beneath.
