  • A Day in the Life

    Abbas stepped out of the customized S.U.V. and straightened his coat. For a moment he just stood there, looking up at the Time Warner building, beaming a grin. It had been difficult--to put it mildly--but he finally got his condo in the incredibly, insanely, almost illegally exclusive Time Warner building. One dealt with a single representative who acted as a go-between for whomever owned the building; no one knew, they said. He had a few ideas, but right then it didn't matter.

    A pair of claps of his umbrella-tip on the sidewalk, then he looked to his chauffeur and barked a laugh. It was a laugh of being proven right yet again. Oh, how far he'd come--and how far he still had yet to go. More years than anyone would believe--more than most could even conceive--spent clawing and scraping and scheming and plotting. Born into slavery, literally fighting just to survive, discovering he was immortal and having to spend centuries defending his head while taking others'--and here he was, in a bespoke suit of silk and wool, looking up at his own condo in the most exclusive building in all of Manhattan.

    Another laugh, then he started striding toward the private entrance. His personal aide slipped out of the vehicle behind him and struggled to keep up.
