• A fleeting glimpse

  Cloistered in a dreary and abandoned chateau seated atop a rocky plateau, few visitors ever find their way through overgrown forested paths to its empty halls. Those that do, oft armed with bared steel or chanted spell, never find their way back. Ever since the chateau’s latest inhabitant took up residence within, the previously picturesque gardens had fallen into disrepair, as had the now overgrown exterior of the building itself.
  
  Those that dared venture inside were faced with ghastly halls, chilled with the outside air as every window was either left open or smashed beyond repair. Past closed curtains and worn tapestries billowing as the wind saw fit, the dusty abandoned corridors and rooms were lit solely with whatever natural light filtered through what gaps the heavy curtains provided. Delving deeper, any brave souls, alone or with others, are often met with fleeting laughter and the sound of flowing garments always just out of sight. The swooshing of fine silks, the pattering of agile bare feet upon fine tiled flooring, no matter which direction one faced, the sounds always seemed behind them, indications of an ephemeral figure flitting to and fro with unnatural speed. If it were not for the small, light footsteps left in the dust, even the least superstitious would have claimed it was a ghost. For those unfortunate enough to come when her chilling hunger boiled over, calling to her frail, weakening limbs, they were graced with a glimpse of her before the end.
  
  As her aching desire grew more insistent her laughter changed, growing intermittent with incomprehensible mutterings in a foreign tongue in the darkness. Such indications of her growing madness only furthered whatever fear and dread crept into those who trespassed on her domain, her home, her hunting ground. From treasure hunters and brave adventurers to dark cultists and necromancers, their fate was always the same. Even the blood of the most holy and most corrupt, which ran with vile taints was spilt in her hunger, even if it was met with a furious hiss instead of a gleeful embrace.
  
  Before the end, before the fleeting darkness caught them, the most unfortunate of visitors caught a glimpse of the one that harried their arrival and stalked them doggedly. Out of the shadows a frail and lithe feminine form appears, whose hunger made her features all the more pale, almost anorexic in nature. A shadow of her potential radiance, she nevertheless brought tears to the chaste and desire to the sinful. Buttery blonde hair, silky smooth and bearing only the faintest shimmer with her strength at its weakest, topped feminine refined half-elven features. Adorning her youthful creamy skin were two moonlight blue eyes that shone with an otherworldly intelligence, twinkling in delight at the thrill of the hunt and the joy of imminent sweet crimson release. Clad in a loosely fitting sheer amethyst gown embroidered with flowing floral designs of pure gold, her movements flowed seamlessly between lightning fast bursts of speed that dazzled even the inhuman eye and stillness which gave her the appearance of being frozen in time.
  
  For many, her approach was as beguiling as it was frightening, and her peaceful, yearning demeanor set them at ease as she slit throats with nail or fang and gorges herself on their vein’s proffered feast. Yet for those with the reflexes or forethought to put up a defense, they were met with a creature of deadly beauty, bearing a primal snarl accentuated by bared fangs. Offered or not, their veins released their secrets all the same, and as she fed upon what blood was edible, her majesty and beauty reached new heights. But such alien beauty was for herself, and herself alone, for if it were not for her gracing her prey with her frail beauty before feeding upon them, none would ever see her true beauty, not even her own two eyes.
  
  Beset by rooms full of mirrors, ponds and fountains offering crystal clear reflections of what lay above them, it was as if she were never there. Such was her curse, her price to pay for immortality. No longer could she revel in her youthful beauty as she brushed her hair in the mirror, no longer could she savor the richness of food as she once did. Now she was left with seeing what of her body her own eyes managed, picking over food bereft of much of its once sought after flavor. Now she was left to shiver in the dark when the warm blood of others did not rush through her veins, left to listen to her faint heartbeat in the darkest of nights as her strength waned as she lay in wait for fresh blood, fresh unwitting offerings.
  
  Yet despite the darkest of lulls, despite her seemingly endless solitude, Gabriella d’Fleur, formerly Gabriella Aerdir, loved her half-life, and never regretted making the decision to give up her long-lived mortality and purity for immortality and ageless beauty.
