Josephine's life began well enough. How did she end up here? Things were perfect, she had recently gotten married to a gorgeous, noble widower. He may have been several years older, but such things weren't frowned upon in high society. Her father told her that he was a good man. A rich man that would help their family name survive their doldrums of wealth. All she had to do was be the ideal little wife. To take care of him and give him children. She couldn't even do that right.
It had been nearly a year and she hadn't gotten pregnant yet. He blamed her, of course. Her family even wondered what was going on. They wanted grandchildren so badly. Her husband never laid a hand on her, but the yelling and insults were more than enough to beat her down. He told her that she was no better than his last wife. She, too, couldn't bare him a child. What good were they if they couldn't give him children. She was going to end up just like her.
On their first anniversary they were meant to take a trip. They were to go to a beautiful foreign land with palm trees and white sand beaches and be waited on hand and foot by exotic servants.
She hugged and kissed her parents goodbye. “I will see you in a month,” she said to her sobbing mother. But Josephine never returned. Her husband said that she had been lost at sea. Falling overboard in rough weather. She was so accident prone, after all! She must have drowned, for he couldn't find her in the rising tides. He had searched for hours, but her body never rose to the surface. They held an elegant funeral. The best of the best were there. She would have loved the flowers, were she able to see them.
Instead, she was in a the belly of a ship, being sent to that foreign place. Chained to a bar with a number of other people. Sold for a mere fifty gold. There were too many pretty young women these days. And she wasn't trained. Her husband was angry at the lack of profit. He wanted more, but they wouldn't give it to him. It was the first time she had seen actual slaves. She heard their stories. Some of them were even like her, pawned by their loved ones for pocket change.
Her husband had stripped her of her clothing and jewelry. The slavers stripped her of her dignity. She wasn't a virgin.. no one would know, and who would believe a slave? Gone were the days she could dream of children. Now she sat in her under dress upon a cold floor. The spirit has left her eyes. All she wanted was to see her mother and father one last time.
