Maggie Lou

Maggie has always been more what society in the 30’s might have considered ‘masculine’. Before she was granted the freedom to venture out into the greater population of city life, she’d always considered it normal to spit and pick her nose and was more likely to be found in a pair of dingy overalls than a dress any day of the week. Her tendency to lean toward getting her hands dirty chasing frogs or digging in the dirt, she got along better with the boys than the women and girls who constantly grimaced at the state of her fingernails. Fear is a sensation that seems to roll right off her back like water on a duck’s feathers, a handy trait for Mags since she was something of a social justice warrior in a time where women were hardly given room to speak let alone taken seriously.

Years spent witnessing the cruelty of ‘normal’ folk against the wonderfully odd and spectacular individuals she called family, she’s made it a personal mission to stand up for those unable to do so for themselves. She carries herself with the mouth and the confidence of someone well above her station in life and it tends to get her into trouble more often than not. However now that she has been allowed to travel more freely she’s been made painfully aware of the expectations of society in stark contrast to what she’s believed her entire life to be normal. That coupled with the ever present concern of her mother’s welfare and happiness, Mags harbors an underlying sense of pensive confusion that her pride only allows to surface when she thinks no one is watching.

Even though Maggie’s mother Birdy carried old fashioned values in terms of marriage and family, she was ahead of her time in the way she raised Maggie to carry herself with strength and self respect and to never rely on anyone to get a job done when she was perfectly capable of getting it done herself. Growing up with a mother like Birdy, she has no trouble with confidence and very easily makes friends, though she is equally likely to leave a bad impression with any unfortunate soul foolish enough to underestimate her gumption. She is stringent in her demands for respect, sharp, and resourceful, qualities that most people don’t truly expect from a woman, let alone a carnie.
