History

  • Declan left Ireland in 1847, two years into the Great Potato Famine that ravaged the country. He was twenty-five at the time and had no intention of leaving, but his mother told him that he should go to America to find a better life while on her deathbed. He couldn't exactly deny his beloved mother her dying wish.

    He arrived in New York and traveled the country for twenty-one years. Sometimes he was run out of a town, sometimes he left because he no longer felt safe, and sometimes he just got tired of the location. In 1868, he settled in Helena, Montana and became a miner.
