  She snarls as they butcher her name, turning its elegant strokes into a mess of jumbled lines on their papers. It falls off their tongue rather than gently rolling as it should, syllables clashing until they only vaguely resemble what they once did.
  
  Her name is Damiya now. They beat it into her, heavy hands and leather whips. In defiance she carves her old name into her leg with her claws. Crimson blood leaves bright stains on previously pristine fur.
  
  دمية.
  
  But their magic heals the wounds, as it always does, and her claws are filed until she can no longer scar herself with the memories of her past.
  
  She is not strong enough to not cry. But she is strong enough not to forget. No matter how many times they make her respond to that name, no matter how hard they hit or how loud they yell, she will not forget. It is her pride, and it is her curse.
