    The physician has trained formally and informally in several regional forms of medicine in their travels. These have been augmented with self-study and self-discovery, zoology, biology, as the physician learns to specialize in non-mundane creatures. Although their practice has evolved far beyond their roots, to a point where their formal teachers may consider their current work an A̯̳̖̤͆͐́̈́͠ͅ ͕͉̫̭̅̿͝͡B ͙̱̔͝O̺͈̠̥̔̓̀̄ ̢̫̟͐̂͒M̥̮̅̕ ͙̣̼͍͌̐͘̚I̛̗̰̳̿̿̂͢ ̤̎Ñ̘͙́ ̻̗͝͠A̞̼͋͘ T ̲̥̊̉͘͜I͉̭̊̏ ̧̦̼̈͒͝Ó̡̟̹͌͘ ̢̮̿̈͜͞Ņ̛͈͛, those roots are still clearly evident.

    ♢ Āyurveda -- An advanced, standardized system of Indian medicine originating in the Vedic Period that fell into decline during the Persian invasion of the Mughal Empire. Considered far more progressive than its Greek counterpart, āyurveda has eight branches, that span diagnostics, surgery, pediatrics, toxicology, reproduction, and longevity. Its basis follows three humours or doshas*, five elements*, and eight dhātus, the primal matters, building blocks, or bodily tissues, and 108 marmas*.

    The Vaidya specializes in surgery, diagnostics, toxicology and longevity, detailed below, utelizing surgical procedures and forms of Indian alchemy and chemistry to R̞̎ ̡͈̆̒E ̡̡̤̣̟̿̀̏̈̉B̼̭̒͂͘͜ ͍́Ǘ̺͚̖̜̀̚͠ ͖͚̪̓̄̔I ̞̭͗̆L̳̲̑̑ ̞͛D the body.

  • ❁ Surgery

    The Vaidya is not content to rely simply on books of anatomy and theory, and actively pursues means of practical, hands-on experience in areas that intrigue them. Specifically supernatural creatures beyond mundane humans. They supplement this by studying zoology, and transposing that knowledge. As such, they are also adept in veterinary care. Although their background was originally in unani* and āyurveda, their continued and relentless pursuit of banned books, unethical experimentation, and strides in learning and manasciences could easily be seen as a B̪͉̽̕ ̙͎̆̽Ȧ̹̥͎̻̥͊̎̽͘ ̳̥̯̍͂̅S͇̯̥̈̊̓ ̖̘̙͇͒̍̆̚T̬̮̯̥̘͗̈́̿͋͋ ̨̬̳͎͊̓͌̒Ä̧̧͎̩̂͒̽ ̢̖͉̈́̂̎R̞̝̃̎ ̜́D͔̞͝͝ ̧́I͈͍͇̦̔̾̕͘ ͇̿Ẑ̳͊ͅ ͈̖̩͇̊̂́̕Á̪̪̦̝̀͑̾ ̢̛̭͌͢͝T̪̻̊͋ ̢̛͎̪̃͌Į̙̬̿̀͂ ̙͍̽̈́O̘͔͗͂ ̺̪̽͘Ṇ̋ by those who simply do not understand the importance of their work. Suśruta stressed research, Suśruta stressed learning, dissection, discovery.

    Āyurveda has two branches of surgery, its techniques of which far outstrip contemporary Greek medicine of that time, of which it is often compared, and instead often rivals or surpasses Victorian approaches. Āyurveda pioneered techniques in plastic surgery, skin grafts, and even cataract removal.
    ♢ Śalya Tantra -- General surgery and parasurgery, concerned with removal of foreign objects, or instant relief of diseases or injuries. Internal and external, just of excising tumors and cysts, fixing hemorrhoids, setting broken bones, and applying skin grafts.

    ♢ Śālākya Tantra -- Specialized surgery of the eyes, ears, nose, throat and teeth, such as removal of cataracts, performing rhinoplasties, and dentistry, to name a narrow range.

With the vaidya's ability to redirect mana, they are able to animate even where life is lost--if any residual Force at all remains.

  • ❁ Alchemy

    Whatever cannot be fixed with surgery, the physician seeks to fix with tinctures, salves and alchemical mixtures. Vegans and the squeamish will not particularly like to know what are in these concoctions. Using their history in āyurvedic medicines and the three doshas, as well as western paracelsianism/spagyric, their 'potions' can range from mundane, based heavily in science, to straight up all-magical mixtures, often radiating soft auras of their own.

    The Indian concepts of alchemy are rooted by Suśruta in āyurveda and chemistry. Strong parallels are also drawn to western iatrochemistry and alchemy. Several sanskrit words exist, in both āyurveda and Indian chemistry, that correlate to different wants in alchemy.
    ♢ Rasāyana -- The word itself can be translated a multitude of ways, including 'path/circulation of liquid/essence/gold/mercury', and is a branch of āyurveda that specializes in elongation of lifespan, slowing aging, and rejuvenation, primarily by use of alchemical preparations.

    ♢ Rasaśāstra -- Another word with a multitude of translations, primarily the science of essence/mercury. Rasaśāstra is the branch of āyurveda that deals specifically with the production of pharmaceuticals through alchemical means. More pointedly, the creation of bhasmas, āyurvedic preparations derived from plants, salts, other organics, and minerals, the most prominent being mercury--cinnabar.
    ♢ Bhasma -- An ash-derived medicinal preparation of mineral/metal/salt/plant or animal matter, involving calcining the material. The processes of creating bhasmas heavily mirror western alchemical preparations.

    ♢ Mahārasa & Uparasa -- The two types of alchemical reagents used in rasaśāstra; the superior reagents, and inferior. They are part of the 'purification' of mercury, the major component of rasaśāstra.

    ♢ Dhātuvāda & Lohavāda -- 'Doctrine of metals' and 'Conversion of metals' are elements of Indian alchemy that focus on mineralogy and metallurgy, isolating metals, as well as producing precious metals such as gold, silver and mercury, from base metals. The physician does not focus on this area except to isolate metals for use in rasaśāstra.

    The scholar's work goes on to clash and mix violently with whatever western or eastern school of thought they encounter and absorb. Where rasaśāstra meets western alchemy and iatrochemistry, they find new ways to blend and distort the bindings of Life. And they will find ways to harm and disrupt that life if need be.

    Poisons and antidotes are a standard part of any physician's kit; the physician is skilled enough at identifying poisons, making poisons, and may even be able to offer an antidote, with a sample. The also have a particular affinity and interest in bacterial, fungal and even viral specimens, something they have been slowly incorporating into parts of their work. Dead, alive, or... Could reanimation even work on something like that?

  • ❁ Fleshcrafting/Mana Science

    Foremost, the physician is not a 'healer' in the magical sense. Their work is based in science, alchemy, pseudoscience, mana sciences. But, having played doctor to many fantastical races, they have come to learn something about the flow of mana in the body, through āyurveda and through their inherent abilities; the doctor has trained their truesight abilities to track that flow, assisting in their diagnostics. For the most part, they cannot employ spellcasting, but do manipulate others' mana to their will, through nadis and penetrating the marmas, and occasionally make use of magic in the forms of glyphs or anchors to stabilize constructs and homunculi, created or at least inserted surgically.

    They use surgery to give them access to, and subtly tap into the mana flow or nadis of the body, where cutting channels can redirect and shift that flow for their own purposes. They do not so much 'scribe runes' as carve elaborate maps and pathways. Their own pull on the flow of mana--an unfortunate side-effect of their condition--can further cause a sort of decay that, although a drawback, is oddly beneficial in their work with the dead. ...Or undead.

  • ❁ Shadows

    The Vaidya is an unfortunate Avatar for a being known only as the S͋͟ ̘̹̂̚H ̧̱̐͗A ͇̥̒̈́D̢̽ ͈̙͎̓̐̇O̟̜̔̿ W̩̍ ̙̀K͎͈̏̽̒̀͢͜ ̛̱̪͠Ǐ̭͚͉̮͚͐̾̌͝ ͌͜N̻̰̓͞ ̹̽Ğ̟͈̳̎̅ . It was a deal struck many moons ago, and affects them in many ways. This being is known to trade for Souls, which could... Explain a thing or two. Known abilities and drawbacks include:
    ♢ Affinity for souls -- An extension of their truesight, they can see and interact with souls. As they leave bodies, as they roam untethered. They also have the ability to pull on these souls, draw them to them, something they can use to delay the eventual passing of an individual for just a little longer--keep the soul within the body until they are able to revive them.

    ♢ Friend of Shadows -- They are particularly adept at disappearing in shadowy corners. Not to the extent that the ability is Obviously Magical, but they have that habit of creeping up on people.

    ♢ Possession -- The Vaidya cannot possess anyone, but if the Shadow King wills it... They lose themself. They become his Mouthpiece. He cannot take their form for very long, but that was the deal they struck. Still, his hold grows stronger with the length of their contract...

  • ❁ Swordplay

    Adept in curved swords of Persian/Indian make, including shimshars, tulwars, or golias. They employ quick, arced slashing motions over stabbing (although being double-edged, that will do in a pinch). Their style is agile, light on their feet, although they are not afraid to throw their weight behind their attacks. They are by no means delicate.

  • ❁ Resistances/Weaknesses

    ♢ The Physician cannot make a deal that involves their soul. Magic that involves manipulating or controlling their soul does not work. Deals that involve trading ownership of their soul are null and magic dependent on the deal fail.

    ♢ The Bride is immune to true-name spells. Any magic that requires a true name to function, or any spell that would reveal the Vaidya's true name ultimately fails. For all intents and purposes, they have no true name. They have had names given to them, and they will accept them, but they are not binding in magic.

    ♢ A weakness to blinding lights. Sudden flashes and blinding lights can dazzle them. They grew up and are used to the desert, but this affliction feels magical in nature, running deeper.

    ♢ Increased tolerance to pain. Almost as if their nerve-endings are damaged. From repeated trauma? Desensitization? It grows worse with every passing year, a numbness mirrored in the ashy frostbite that creeps up their fingers...
