• Literacy

  To me, literacy can be defined simply as a combination of readability and creativity. One without the other doesn't work. I have to be able to read the post, and I have to want to read it as well.
  
  Creativity without readability is frustrating. Having a great story line, interesting drama, and characters with depth is important, but if I'm constantly second guessing what you mean in your posts, then the story is never going to go anywhere. Either one of us will become frustrated and back out, or we'll have to continuously loop back and rewrite things in order to make corrections.
  
  On the other hand, readability without creativity is boring. Stock characters and generic plots never hold anyone's interest for long. One could be the best writer in the world from a technical standpoint, but without the ability to catch and hold a reader's interest, then you might as well be typing out the financial history of Quebec for all anyone's going to care.
  
  You'll note that I said nothing about length. I don't think length, in itself, matters. If you can write a captivating post that moves the story along in 2 sentences, go for it! Mind you, I do think that's extremely hard to do, so my posts tend to average between one and four paragraphs, but nevertheless. Sometimes, such as with scenes which are dialogue or action heavy, it's hard to get out more than a short paragraph, and I'd rather that than a page length of drivel.

• IMPORTANT

  This is something that has caused me problems with roleplays and roleplay partners in the past, so I've decided to make it clear here and now.
  
  I suffer from rapid cycling depression, also known as manic depression, also known as bipolar disorder.
  
  I go through periods of mania (aka "ups") and depression (aka "downs" or "lows"). During an up, I write constantly, reply sometimes within minutes of my partner posting, come up with a million ideas and dive head first into every project, roleplay, and plot I have going.
  
  During a down, though, things are harder. I might reply once every few days, once a day if lucky. Replies might be a little shorter -- not less than a paragraph, and my grammar doesn't go to hell or anything, but not the multi-para works I usually do -- and very sporadic.
  
  If I hit a deep low, it's worse. Sometimes I can't gather the spoons for OOC contact but I can manage a few replies; sometimes I can talk OOC but don't have the muse free for replies. Sometimes, if it's really bad, I can't do either, resulting in complete radio silence.
  
  I don't drop roleplays without a word (with the exception of if a partner is being openly passive aggressive or outright aggressive about things), so you can feel safe in knowing that radio silence more likely than not just means I'm in a bad low.
  
  These lows and highs can last a few days or a few weeks. They come and go without warning. Sometimes I'm in a mania on Monday and I wake up Tuesday morning oceans deep and drowning. I can't control it, I can't plan for it, and I need partners who can be understanding of this.
