  • Ambrose was born into a family of cultists who believed in the existence of unfathomable, earth-bound gods, deities who demanded worship and tribute in return for their blessings. In the beginning, worship and tribute were shown in offerings crops and livestock, while blessings took the form of plentiful harvests and protection from disease. Having won the favor of the gods, the Everleighs' prosperity attracted those who desired to achieve the same level of bounty, and over time their cult expanded to include politicians and high-ranking members of society.

    But as the number of zealots increased, so too did the demands of the gods, whose regular tributes began necessitating the sacrifice of human life. In return, the otherworldly creatures' rewards escalated to glittering minerals, priceless gems, and other items of unimaginable value. Pittances in the eyes of immortal beings for whom possessions and material wealth were mere trivialities, but more than enough to win the devotion of the humans who served them. Humans who, as years came and went, grew numb to the atrocities they committed in the name of worship and their subsequent wealth.

    The Everleigh estate served as the center of the cult for nine generations, led by the patriarch Lucius Everleigh; Ambrose's father and the cult's head priest. As the eldest son, the title of Keeper of the Altar fell onto Ambrose's shoulders, and with it came the duty of preserving their relics, artifacts, and gospels as dictated by their masters. Though he failed to possess the same level of devotion as those around him, he remained a dutiful member and a procurer of sacrifices demanded by the eldritch gods, eternally fearful of what hell might befall his kin should he have faltered in his duties. A regular participant in the cult's ghoulish rituals, he remained complicit and unyielding in his efforts to placate his masters, for he knew of no other life save one driven by violence and sacrifice.

    Times changed, belief waned, and the zealots' numbers began to dwindle until only members of the Everleigh family remained. Ever demanding, the unnameable gods maintained a relentless, voracious hunger. They expected their due from a constantly decreasing pool of worshipers until the few who remained, taxed by the needs of their lords and masters, began to rip apart at the seams. One by one, from oldest to youngest, they descended into fits of madness beneath the crushing weight of their burden, eventually leaving Ambrose the sole surviving member of the Everleigh bloodline. Left alive and kept alive to satisfy the bloodlust of temperamental gods whose wrath he dares not tempt.

    As a direct result of the immense weight on his shoulders, Ambrose's quiet charm is also quite fragile. He is difficult to anger, but when set off, his temper can be volatile. Though such occasions are rare, he has been known to lose himself to the point of situational amnesia until the rage-induced adrenaline wears off. On top of this, he has crippling insomnia that keeps him from reaching a state of deep sleep, and when he does manage to nod off, it's generally for a mere hour at a time. During rare periods of deep sleep, he is prone to vivid nightmares and sleepwalking, usually only prompted by severe episodes of stress.

    Though he is burdened by the weight of his responsibilities, Ambrose is not without a desire for companionship and belonging. As he no longer finds either in members of his community - largely owing to a blight on his family name, the mad Everleighs - he spends his winters abroad when the Dark Ones sleep. One year, he might find himself in America. Another year, India. Wherever the whim takes him, as far as he can manage for as long as he can manage, until duty calls him home in the spring.
