Both his parents began chastising him as well for not being sociable. How could he possibly get married and continue on the family name if he never even struck up a conversation with a woman? Perhaps he was too lean, or too effeminate.
This turned into dressing him more boyishly, cutting his hair by force, and his father taking him to underground establishments. In fact, it was due to his father that Winifred even lost his virginity. Now, do not mistake this as incestuous rape, but more the fact that his father picked out a woman of the night, and paid for whatever 'needed' to be done and however long it took. All in all, it could also explain his need for darkness during indulging in his physical desires.
