Pale, almost alabaster skin with soft pink and bronze undertones. Slender body, lithe build.

  • Special Note: Hanna's world is sort of a combination between the worlds of His Dark Materials and Treasure Planet. A lot of steampunk technology. And, like every character in the His Dark Materials books, each person in Hanna's world has a dæmon, which is the physical manifestation of his or her soul.

• But the Devil's in the Details

  Hanna Euphemia Clarke has lived, thus far, a rather ordinary existence. She was born in an industrial city, to ambitious parents. Her father, Arthur Clarke, an aspiring aeronaut, fell in love with her mother, Mia, a passionate, headstrong scientist, when they were scarcely more than teenagers. He was enlisted in the royal naval academy while she was turning heads at one of the country's most renowned universities. She was one of the first women ever accepted into the age-old school, and Mia spent years proving herself to superior male staff and peers. The two lovers had to endure the trials of their passions alone, but they never forgot each other. Arthur wrote letters to his darling Mia, and she replied every chance she got - between studying, experimenting, and debating. When she graduated, Arthur was made a captain and the two of them finally married.
  
  Their marriage had a rocky start, not for lack of love, but with Arthur called away on duty to fight in the Queen's wars, Mia couldn't stand playing housewife, and moved herself North. She instilled herself into a laboratory, and sought (and was promptly granted) funding to study the stars. She brought along two of three assistants, but most of her work was done alone. She worked furiously - given the time and space to focus her attention, the young woman started down a revolutionary path to discovery. She probed into the research of scientists passed, and made great observations on the cosmos, specifically, black holes and time travel. It was theoretical research, but the theories were, by all accounts, probable.
  
  While out on the ice one evening, studying the Aurora lights, Mia slipped into a crevasse, and nearly tumbled to her death. But a lone panserbjørne (exiled by his kind) heard her cries, and came loping through the night to investigate the sound. His name was Joramun, and he rescued her that night. Mia had never seen an armored bear before, but from that night on, she was grateful for the great white beast. He was reserved, and temperamental, but a brave companion. He became dearer to her than even her lab assistants, and reminded her every now and again that there was a life beneath the sky - even if her beloved Arthur was away. Joramun became a guardian of sorts, accompanying Mia on her expeditions out onto the ice.
  
  Arthur eventually came home. He was wounded, but it was his pride that suffered the most. He hated to be sent home from battle while his comrades were still dying in their airships. But he was glad to see his darling wife again. Mia became pregnant a few months later, and after nearly seven months of pregnancy, the young woman reluctantly sent her assistants home. She intended to get back to her work as soon as the child was born, but the baby stole her heart.
  
  Arthur and Mia had three children: Henry, Benjamin, and Rosalie. By the time Rosalie was out of diapers and able to entertain herself, Mia was itching to get back to work. She loved her children, but she missed her purpose. Arthur had created a rather successful business, running airships up and down the Northern coast. He occasionally went farther South, sometimes for a month or two at a time, but his favorite jobs were taking his wife out in their own small cruiser - while she would study the Aurora, he'd be busy, studying her.
  
  When Mia became pregnant a fourth time, it was a surprise. At first, she was devastated, and frustrated - and then, profusely guilty. She wanted the child, of course, but Mia worked in her lab until Arthur finally more firmly assured her it was time to rest - Mia was seven months pregnant by then, and something didn't seem quite right. A few weeks later, Hanna was born, slightly premature and extremely small.
  
  But she was strong, and with her parents' care (they'd rushed in a hurry back to civilization, when Mia had started having complications), Hanna and her dæmon, Casimir, were both brought back to the wild country her family called home.
  
  Hanna was spoiled, by her brothers and sister, and by her parents. Her mother was often busy with her work - catching up on "lost time" - but her father taught her how to operate the solar longboat. He let her take it out by herself when she turned twelve, much to Hanna and Casimir's delight. Most of her expeditions, though, involved Joramun. He was always her snowy shadow, protecting her from the savage North. Despite her parents' wonderful upbringing...Hanna still grew up a little wild. The unpredictability of the North was in her veins; in all their veins, her, her brothers, and her sister. They tended to take after their father, who was less refined than Mia - but still a charming man, really. His dæmon, Nefia, was a falcon. Mia's was a lynx. Henry's settled as a wolf, though. And Ben's was a wolverine. Rosalie's became a black cat. And when Hanna finally came of age, her Casimir settled his shape: a red fox.
  
  Hanna's time was mostly spent between helping her father manage the airships, occasionally acting as first mate, and assisting her mother with her continued research. She had a fondness, growing up, for mischief - and being the youngest, she frequently got away with it. It was one of the most surefire ways to get attention which, despite her parents' endearing love, was sometimes distracted. But Hanna was eager to find her own purpose, and found herself aching for the adventure she'd always heard her father describing when he talked about the different places he'd seen during the war.
  
  She wanted to see more, but she was torn. The North, their home, the lab...the airships, and Joramun...it was all she knew.
