• Biography

  All of the children's parents had come to visit the school for the big fair. With all of us kids given a task to perform, like running a shop, or greeting people who came to the festival, parents had come to support their children; be a part of their lives. Everyone's parents except my own.
  
  But by then, I'd grown used to the isolation I felt when everyone around me had a loving family and I had... A father who was always away on business, and an alcoholic mother who only ever came home to recover from a night out. Still, seeing the children at that fair that day with their parents made me feel a special kind of loneliness, a special kind of jealousy. It was the most wicked combination of envy and solitude, and it hurts me even to this day sometimes.
  
  I could still remember the smiling faces of all the kids and adults gathered at the fair. Ugh! I hated it! It felt like they were smiling at me... Secretly laughing at me for being so pathetic and alone in the world. That's probably when it dawned on me. These kids and their fathers and mothers had gathered over the school; for a positive reason, definitely, but still they had gathered through the school. Maybe the school could help me?
  
  That's when my delinquency started. I remember clear as day the first time I ever hit another girl in my class. I did it with the thought that maybe my mom would come and punish me. And even though punishment isn't a good thing... I wanted any form of attention from her. Anything.
  
  The school was furious! They put me in detention and refused to let me go home until my mother or father came to pick me up. I remember the look on my mom's face when she came out of the principle's office. It wasn't disappointed, or angry, or anything... Her face was blank; her expression dull as she took my by the wrist and made me follow her to her car. The ride home was quiet as well, and when we arrived our house, she simply kicked me out of the car.
  
  “I'm going out with Mizure tonight. There's microwavable food in the freezer; don't make a mess,” she said to me, uninterested in whether I'd be okay or not. Mom was like that... She didn't care about anything really.
  
  So, I kept acting out, hoping that one day, Dad would be the one to come pick me up from school and maybe he'd yell at me and tell me that I shouldn't be misbehaved. Then at least I'd know that he cared enough to make sure I was a decent person. But that day never came, and as I grew into my teens and started secondary school, my mother stopped coming to pick me up from the principle's office too.
  
  I guess I was really alone...
  
  Around that time, I stopped hurting others because I wanted my parent's attention, and started doing it because I was jealous of them. How come everyone else was allowed to be loved, but not me? It wasn't fair! I lashed out at other students constantly, skipped classes, and found myself in a good amount of trouble with the cops. But I didn't care. I don't care...
  
  Once, I thought to pick a fight with another delinquent. He was a lot bigger than me, but I wasn't scared. We met under a bridge near the river and before I knew it, his friends were pinning me down while he kicked me over and over and over again.
  
  Then, the worst thing I could imagine had happened. A girl I frequently picked on was walking by and saw the beating I was receiving. Even though I had been so cruel to her for so long, she ran down the hill and pleaded with the others to stop hurting me so much. But they didn't care at all. So she tried to stop them herself. She pulled at my attacker's arm and begged him to stop. It wasn't much, but it was enough for me to get up and put up something of a fight while they were distracted... And I did. I swung my fists at them, I kicked at them, but before I knew it, something had struck me on the back of my head and the world around me faded to black.
  
  I woke up in the hospital. Nurses told me I'd been hit by a pipe and knocked out cold, and that I had a couple of bruised and broken ribs. I felt defeated... But nothing was worse than what I heard next.
  
  That girl who came to my aid... In the confusion of the fight, she was also struck by the pipe, though she wasn't nearly as lucky as me. They cracked her skull open and ran when they realized she was going to die. She was gone.
  
  Where were my parents? Why didn't they come to see me? I was alone on that hospital bed, wishing that I could just go back and tell that girl I was sorry! I felt so much regret in my heart... My chest burned with a unique sort of pain that I can't really describe.
  
  All I know is that in that moment, I had a wish. I wanted to be strong enough to stand alone, and never need someone else to be put in harm's way like that girl was. Even if I wouldn't change my delinquent ways, I couldn't bear the thought of someone dying because I was weak. My heart clamored for strength in a way I'd never clamored for anything before. For the power to undo that death. To take on anything alone and never need to be saved by anyone again... No one should have to die because of me.
  
  And I guess someone heard my wish. Someone in a distant world heard my heart's cry for help and answered.
  
  That was when he showed up. A phantom, I guess? I could see him clear as day. I knew he wasn't human, not with that almost surreal appearance which made him look like he'd been made of the magic we read about in fairy tales, but he was real. With strong arms, and trunk-like legs, and a powerful chest, he was intimidating. Embedded in his abdomen, he had a sort of clock.
  
  I tried to cringe away, but before I could, he touched my forehead. I knew in that instant that I had been heard. This magical person was a familiar, and he was attached to my soul. I knew everything about him, and what his purpose was, and I took great comfort in knowing that through him, I could be strong. I could be at the top of the food chain, never needing to be rescued, and wielding enough power that loneliness could never hurt me again.
  
  I named him Timely Phantom, and since then, I've never felt stronger.
