While yes the young lady is a slave, handler is not synonymous with the idea that they take care of slaves. It is also someone who specializes in working with animals that are already trained to bring out the best of their abilities.

Examples in our day and age would be:
Bomb dogs
Drug dogs
Corpse dogs
Horse (Dressage, rodeo, roping ect)
Hawking (Flying hunters, maintaining them)

A handler (and Tine) specialized in helping trained creatures find the best of themselves while also ensuring they're taken care of after such arduous tasks.

A creature that survived the wilds, she's her own slew of basic things she's had to do for survival. Do or die when you're running the woods of the Highland or low moors.
