Background

• ❦ Emalyn lives with her single satanist mother, who decided to keep her primarily for the child support out of spite towards her ex. Her mother informed Ema of this when the girl disagreed with being primarily selfish, "Being selfish can be a good thing, if I hadn't done it you wouldn't even be here." Naturally this didn't affect her self esteem all that positively.
  
  ❦ Her mother often attempted to fix things herself at home, (partiuclarly health related issues) which instilled a fear of DIY medical fixes, due to her mother often hurting her in the process. Example: Ema stuck a bead in her ear, most likely to imitate earrings when she was 4, and when tweezers failed her mom used a vaccuum stick. Which popped her daughter's eardrum.
  
  ❦ Because of her mother's strange disapproval of her helpfulness, Ema looked elsewhere for people who would appreciate her, which she found at school. Emalyn received approval for her this, hence her selflessness towards those she perceives as superior.
  
  ❦ However, Ema's peers gradually gave her less attention for her helpful behavior as time wore on and the relationships progressed. And really, at this point, that was about all there was to her, so she was considered boring and told as much at times. She would only really be recognized for the people she associated with which is why she stronlgy identifies with groups and labels in the hopes she will be memorable.
  
  ❦ Occasionally, Emalyn was remembered for something else - her hair and her grades. She had difficulty understanding the material and her mother was of no help when she did work up the courage to ask, "What, are you stupid? It's easy," "Actually read it and stop being lazy," etc. "The dumb blonde" she was dubbed, which fed into her insecurity in regards to her intellect. Later in highschool Ema dyed her hair pastel pink possibly because she didn't want her history to repeat itself.
  
  ❦ Ema was always a sensitive person,and in her earlier years she would express that, much to the annoyance of her mother - "I didn't ask, Ema, stop being so sensitive" "Your emotions aren't my problem" and such. Her mother was never really abusive, she just was rather mean and not understanding.
