Modern Backstory
Born 29 years ago in Dallas, Texas, Harley grew up in a fairly violetile home with her mother and her father fighting constantly. She is mixed race, Siksikaitsitapi Native American (also referred to as Blackfoot) and white. Her two brothers and one sister were several years older than her and tended to pick on her mercilessly to the point where it no longer was teasing and became something else entirely. Harley struggled for a long time to get out of her families home, but eventually was able to attend a four + two year program at Duke University, one of those years being a required internship. Despite the several times she was certain she would fail, Harley managed to get a degree in psychology and family therapy. She wasn't entirely certain what she wanted to do with it, but she wanted to have something to lean on and helping people makes her happy.
When she was 20, still in college, she met Roland Mcree. He seemed like such a sweet and hard working man; but that quickly changed. When she graduated he convinced her to move to Georgia with him, proposing to her even though she wasn't quite ready, and forced her into a quick marriage. Over the next couple of years she struggled with his physical, mental and emotional abuse. It made her feel weak, riddled with anxiety and she rarely left the house, depending on his paycheck for everything with caused her to become completely dependent on him and feel like she had no way out.
She painted when he was at work, and overtime figured out how to sell her paintings online and manage to get her own money. However before she could get enough to really get out of there, Harley was forced to defend herself for the last time. It was her life, or his, and in the end she lived. She was tried in court and pleaded self defense, given the bruises on her person and the journal entries detailing her abuse, she was not punished.
She still lives in Georgia in her own house, on her own plot of land where she raises chickens, grows various veggies and fruits, gives horseback rides as part of a therapeutic program, and paints.
AU/Historical Backstory
No one knows very much about Harley but they tend to love or hate her. She appeared in several parts of the frontier when she was 18 years old, but was most commonly seen in the Arizona and Utah areas of the frontier when she was 25 and older, but still traveled to some of the northern states when she was needed.
She is mixed raced with a unknown to her Native American tribe and white, her mother was sexually assaulted by an English soldier and it resulted in her birth. He was killed by her mother's brother, so Harley fortunately never had to deal with him.
While her race is not always noticeable, when people realize this they often mistreat her. Harley was married to an older white cattle rancher when she was 13 after being kidnapped from her home until she was 19. He was very abusive, and the only way she managed to get out of there was to kill him and claim it was a group of bandits that had recently come through. Due to this, when the bandits discovered her blame on them, when they found her in another settlement when she was 21, they gave her no mercy. Harley was sexually assaulted by several of them and was burned with cigars and lighters along her back and thighs. She managed to get away when they got drunk and passed out nearby, having left her lying in a haystack. She set them and the barn on fire and stole one of their horses and guns before getting out of there.
At the moment she frequently travels with and runs into three other women on a similar life path as her with rough histories, Daisy, Stix and Maysn.
