Ezzae'ra

History

• Background

  Ezzae'ra comes from a region of the ocean known as the Forgotten Cove. The rocky shallows proved to be a death grip for any ship that strayed too near. It was barren, with little to no vegetation, and the spires that reached out towards the clouds created an ominous atmosphere. Waves had beaten shipwrecks into nothing more than pieces of driftwood, stuck on the outcroppings. Beneath the cove wound a deep, vast tunnel system, where the mermaids lived.
  
  They live primarily on sea life, however this desolate location becomes a bountiful hunting ground as her and her kin can sense ships coming from kilometres away. At night, the females emerge from the haven of the tunnels to perch atop the cove. Their beautiful, hypnotic voices carries for leagues over the open water, and any sailors unfortunate enough to behold the haunting songs are unable to help but steer straight towards the waiting maw of the cove. The ships are torn apart from below by the sharp rock. Unwitting men jump straight overboard, and into the open arms of the mermaids, only to be dragged beneath the surface and torn apart.
  
  The mermaids have their own complex language and social circles. Given that the females are the primary hunters, they lead the pods, which mostly consist of individual families. For the event of an incoming ship, they will set aside territorial differences to feast together. Many would consider them primitive creatures, however they are very intelligent. They sequester themselves away from humankind - and any other species ashore - because they feel that land creatures are inferior, and merely a source of food. Very rarely do they venture from the Forgotten Cove, and it's unknown exactly how many in number they are or how spread the population is.
  
  They live to be nearly 500, and Ezzae'ra is considered very young for her kind. She has no mate, and bends to the will of the older females. She bears a great curiosity for surface dweller items, and has a small collection of things gathered from the shipwrecks. There is an old tale they tell children that if dried up on land too long, they will shed their tail and form legs. No one thinks its true, of course, but yet no one knows if it's not, either.
