• Lessons in Loss

  Growing up on the streets of Cairo, one learned early to expect nothing. If you expected nothing, you were always satisfied with the outcome. Orphaned at the age of three, he was left to his own devices as many of the children of the poor were. Illness took his parents, the Landlord took what was left, and Malak was alone on the street before the bodies of his parents were in the ground. Living off scraps for the rest of his childhood, he learned to be more beast than boy. Fighting and stealing were his ways, friendship and play were distant memories and precious things far beyond the reach of an outcast to society such as him.
  
  His adolescence fared him no better. An urchin, given to pick-pocketing and petty crimes to ensure his next meal, he'd had two long stays in the local jail before he was old enough to be considered a man. But this second stay, as what passed for a street orphan's luck would have it, was what proved a final change in his prolonged suffering. A woman of extraordinary beauty was visiting, and it was she who saw Malak being kicked to the street when his time had been served. Muddy, starving and smelling of the filth and muck, she took the young man into her employ on the very spot.
