    7K9vmHz.pngRecorded in history, a sin-eater is a person who consumes a meal in order to spiritually take on the sins of a deceased person. The food was believed to absorb the sins of a recently dead person, thus absolving the soul of the person. How does one become a sin-eater, you may ask yourself? It was once an occupation; however, there lies a darker origin. Sin-Eaters are mortals who have died, but have resisted the temptation of Death and return to the world of the living with a number of gifts. Now deemed unworthy of walking into the pearly gates of paradise, yet forever beckoned into the pits of damnation, a sin-eater is unable to find pleasures as a mortal, forced to partake in the grotesque ways of life under the threat of losing what few strands of humanity they have left.

    || C r e a t i o n ||

    Humans likely to become Sin-Eaters are ones who have already been in contact with the dead in one way or another. They may be sensitive to spiritual activity, can hear or see ghosts, can foretell another's death, or any other number of ghostly contact. Most potential Sin-Eaters have no clue as they became sensitive to the words and deeds of the dead; for some, it seems to be an innate talent, while for others it might be a chance supernatural encounter or pure and simple luck.

    Whether they treat their "gifts" as a blessing or curse, their ability somehow communicate with the dead is part of what allows them to return to life. The other part is a deep desire to remain living, a strong stuborn nature that refuses to accept the unbecoming ending of a story. Those who defy death in such a way snares the soul before it is beyond their reach and offers it a life if the potential Sin-Eater is willing to pay the price.

  • Death Sight
    Mallory does not see things in the physical world as they appear, but as they someday will be. To see death in everything. A person about to die might appear cadaverous, with hollow eyes and jaundiced skin; a car destined to crash will appear dented in advance. Much of the world seems decayed or near collapse. Curtains are tattered, roads are potholed, paint is peeling, metal is rusting. This can be used to find weak spots and to measure the level of vitality within a person. The visions come slowly to Mallory, like the dawning of hunger, and brings with it a gradual appearance of decay and deprivation. Everything becomes empty and distant in her eyes. Those around her may find that her eyes become dilated and bloodshot when under this effect - shifting slowly to become black as empty sockets.
    Resilient Nature
    Previously in her life, one would have thought Mallory to be made of porcelain. A strong gust of wind may ruin her sense of balance, shattering upon impact with the ground. But now, after her death, Mallory thinks herself more akin to marble. The means of brute strength prove to be difficult when asserting it in her direction. She always seems to get back on her feet despite it all. Sedatives may hinder her motion but will remain conscious to the world around her. Any injury that graces her body regenerate regardless of infliction. What might take a normal human two weeks to heal would take her 3 days - critical bleeding may stop in minutes or an hour.
  • Dismal Fare
    Food, Mallory found, losses its appeal after one returned to life. It lies heavy in her stomach and melts away like ash in her mouth. No, no; the only sustenance that is worthwhile is a bit morbid, to say the least. Funny enough, she enjoys ‘haunting’ areas that have experienced tragedy or been touched by scandal, or collects objects of the macabre such as skulls and other memorabilia. Negative energy rejuvenates her the same way the sun feeds the garden. And in return, she becomes more physically able compared to other mortals, not to an absurd degree but enough to withstand the fragility existence of being human; living longer than the usual expectancy, unable to be rendered unconscious against her will, and being resilient to any hardships she may face in her journey.
    Timeless Visage
    Aged in both heart and mind; she is an old soul who possesses an outlook on life vastly different and is far more matured than her usual youthful appearance. Being a woman that remains stagnant in a world in fast pace motion, Mallory seems to be untouched by time. This, however, does not imply that she is immortal or indestructible. She, in fact, ages very slowly. Ten years totals up to one in her case. Yet, because of this, Mallory is behind most trends of society. With each new craze that become popular, she tends to lack the ability to understand the new change. As well, being that her body does not age alongside with her peers, Mallory is at times forced to uproot and leave when others grow suspicious of her façade.

  • Unnoticeable Presence

    Even before her death, Mallory was always known for being soft-footed. Few in her life even would joke about buying her a bell, so that they may know where she is at all times. Now, such a talent has been enhanced to the point it is unnatural. Taking a walk through the public streets guarantee that no interaction may be encountered. At one point, she may be looking over your shoulder to read something, only to break the spell not a moment later to comment on something and watch with dark humor at the surprise reaction that she would be given in response.
  • Biting Zephyr

    Have you ever had a cold wind brush past you when you enter a room? Or feel a chill run down your spine without reason? Mallory has the ability to bring an unsettling atmosphere to the area around her if she so desires. In a short matter of time - a thin layer of frost will cover the objects in the domain. This freezing aura sparks paranoia in the mind, disconnects one from the reality, and breeds a dread that lies like a rock in the stomach. The longer someone stays in this environment, it will lead on to exposure; leading to pneumonia, frost bite, and ultimately hypothermia.

  • Anathema

    'Pay back is a cruel mistress.' This phrase is spoken when misdeeds are done upon Mallory, in which a cold wind follows her. Isolation is the worst thing imaginable to many. To be ostracized not only from groups, but from society. The curse is slow but grows more drastic as it continues. One may find that their opinion is not valued, people not recalling the unfortunate soul unless something prompts them to remember, until ultimately their very existence is disregarded. The victim may find as well, that everyone surrounding them possess distorted features and speak in gibberish.

    Bane

    While some Manifestations are subtle, laying curses on a target or infusing the world around her with the energies of death – Bane possesses the opposite effect. With a mere touch, Mallory can drain the vitality from a surface, object, or person. Such an assault inspires weakness the longer the contact is held. Not a mark is left behind that will trace back to her, as if being touched by a phantom. With this ill gained energy – Mallory is able to heal her own anatomy. With enough practice, Mallory will be able to steal the very breath from the victim’s body.
  • Displacement
    ▮▮▮▮▯
    The stereotypical act in hauntings where inanimate objects move on their own. It can be as subtle as something being misplaced or as dramatic as the whole house erupting in chaos. The ability is normally used to cause a distraction, but a well-aimed vase to the face does wonders when the time arises. A mere glance or a surge of emotions can summon this power, though it can be both mentally and physically draining if overextended to the point of exhaustion. Once she is done, it is not uncommon for her to go back home or to her workplace to recover.

    Veil

    The Veil acts as the shield of the Sin-Eater. On activation, plasm seeps over Mallory’s body from every pore, thus forming an effective armor against an assault. It is generally invisible to anyone save ghosts and herself. Other supernatural creatures may be able to perceive the Veil with appropriate abilities. In many ways, this shield has made Mallory nearly intangible. It has gifted her unnatural speed, proving useful when attempting to dodge attacks directed her way. However, this can prove to be draining the longer it is activated.

    Magnetism
    Before her death, Mallory was deemed special in certain ways. Not only a woman before her time, but an unusual gift was granted to her upon birth. Being sensitive to certain matter, or being a clairvoyant to put it in layman's terms, was what brought her to this new life full of opportunities that were once withheld from her reach. With that said, there is a drawback to such a third eye. Possessing senses that comprehend the unseen world attracts those who do not wish to be seen. This is not limited to specters, mind you. Vampires, demons, those touched by the realm of the supernatural seem to be drawn by her presence.

    Mortality
    Mallory is anything but immortal. While possessing a few perks, she is still regrettably mortal. The fact of the matter is that she merely ages at a slow pace. The possibility of dying a second time is standard, yet difficult. Because of her resilient nature, normal means of bodily harm can be resisted to a degree. However, when that limit is breeched, her body starts to deteriorate. If the aura of death is withheld for a certain amount of time, Mallory is rendered to a skeleton as time catches up with her corpse, before falling into a pile of ashes. And so deteriorates her humanity until she is rendered a rabid animal.
    Neglected
    Memories can be fleeting, fickle even, as time passes. One can forget a stranger in a blink of an eye, an acquaintance after months of absence, a friend after years of silence, and what may seem like an eternity if a lover goes missing. It is worst in the case of Mallory, however. If she does not remain in close contact with those she is associated with, in time, they will forget of her very existence. It has happened many times before in the past, so much so that she has become distant towards others to save herself the heartache until the more recent years. Now, she struggles to maintain that connection with others. She craves it, yet is burdened with the fear of being harmed by those she cares for.

    Unphotogenic
    By no means is Mallory unattractive. On the contrary, she holds a beauty that could not be contained in a painting. And now, with cameras so easily assessable to the public, a new flaw has been discovered whenever she becomes the subject of the photograph. The film becomes corrupted or a mistake can be found within the photo. Whenever she is within a picture, the image becomes distorted in some shape or fashion. She may appear ethereal in one, while in another her eyes may be empty sockets. If caught on video, then the film is rendered to static and white noise whenever the camera is turned in her direction. While this proves to be useful while doing her work, it can prove to be hazardous to hiding her identity.
