  • Behavior

    Joy is a quiet and reserved young woman. She’s not very sociable and often keeps to herself, but she’s usually polite and good-natured. Joy has dealt with anxiety since childhood and it has become a problem in her everyday life. Because she fears rejection and is easily overwhelmed by external events, Joy has a tendency to resort to habits such as fidgeting and curling her hair to find relief. She has obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and her usual method of relieving anxiety is reading, watching TV and smoking (as much as she has tried to quit).

    Due to her somewhat troubled past, Joy is perturbed and usually deals with negative thoughts. She may also be highly sensitive at times, which might make her get upset and lash out at others if they get her frustrated or upset. However, her anxiety may sometimes get the best of her and make her become easily vulnerable for fear and panic if she’s under a lot of stress. Her issues with this are evident if one were to look upon her face. Which is pale and slightly blemished as a result.

    She doesn’t like the idea of being alone but finds it hard to trust others. She wishes to open up and hopes to find the ideal relationships for her. Joy is rather skeptical when it comes to religion and spiritual beliefs and has a somewhat humanist approach towards life. She wants to find her own happiness, but anxiety has pretty much sabotaged her opportunities to improve as a person. Which makes her feel guilty for not being able to be strong enough at times.

  • Life

    Joy came from a middle class family that lived in a suburban city. As a child, she wasn’t high-spirited or cheerful like most, so she always preferred doing things on her own instead of making friends and playing with other kids. Her parents were concerned over this behavior and tried to encourage her to be more sociable. Still, she only grew up with one single childhood friend whom she highly treasured. At least until her family moved and she could no longer keep in touch with them.

    Years later, Joy started high school and she spent most of it friendless until someone came into her life. A girl called Leenie Harris, who was very much like Joy in terms of personality. They both shared interests such as shopping, sightseeing and introspection. They became really close friends. However, as time elapsed, Leenie became very attached to Joy and would often get jealous of her other relationships. To the point where Leenie would try to sabotage any potential friendships. Unbeknownst to Joy, Leenie was developing an obsession for her friend.

    In fact, Leenie had become overly-attached to Joy as the only “true” friend she ever had and the fear of losing her made her become paranoid, manipulative, selfish and psychotic. Things took a turn for the worse when Leenie began guilt-tripping and emotionally manipulating Joy into the friendship for a long time. And Joy, seeing her as her closest friend, allowed it to go on for many months. Nonetheless, it all became too emotionally draining for Joy.

    After having distanced herself and not paying attention to Leenie at school and social media, she finally addressed her to talk. Leenie was hoping to get her friendship back, but was surprised when Joy actually said she didn’t want to be friends anymore and wished for them both to part ways. Leenie didn’t take this well and after an argument, she threatened to commit suicide if Joy didn’t maintain their friendship. Despite the risk Joy refused, but that’d be a decision she would regret for the rest of her life.

    Leenie called Joy a “traitor” and left the area. Joy returned home and didn’t think too much about the previous events although she was worried about what would happen. Days later, Joy received a text from an unknown number that merely stated “it’s all your fault”. Although she didn’t know who it was she was most certainly sure it had been Leenie, her suspicions were confirmed when she discovered her longtime friend had actually committed suicide by jumping off the rooftop of the third floor of the highschool they both spend their time in.

    This event marked Joy forever, as she couldn’t shake off those parting words. “It’s all your fault”. She was so mentally overwhelmed by guilt over Leenie’s death that Joy had to be temporarily admitted in a psychiatric hospital for a month. The guilt, the depression and the restlessness she felt in those moments was something she would never ever forget. After leaving the hospital, Joy tried to get back on her life. And after a while, she actually graduated from highschool albeit with low spirits.

    Joy tried to apply for jobs but she was hardly ever successful in it. She still struggled with anxiety and momentarily developed the habit of smoking in order to cope. She spent the following years working in low-paid jobs such as babysitting and cleaning. By the time, she was living all by herself in an apartment whose rent she paid with the help of her mother. Sometime later, Joy got the best job she could have had so far in her life thanks to her mother: a shop assistant in a local mall.

    Everything went well for her during the first weeks. However, Joy had a relapse with anxiety which began affecting her everyday life once more. So much that she became inefficient at work and her manager eventually had no choice but to fire her for being inadequate for the job. That was a blow for Joy, who had to live by herself with a temporary stipend from her mother and no one to support her. With no signs of recovering, Joy now seeks to find a way to get over the past and live a normal life. But what she doesn’t know is that her nightmare was far from over, and it was just starting.
